Going to Belize

So I'm going to Belize next Friday for an ecology class, and this will be the first time I've dove since I got my OW over the summer, and the first time I've ever dove in the ocean. Any tips on packing, diving, foreign dos and don'ts?

I enjoyed diving in Belize a lot. I dove off of Ambergris Caye and did the 3 dive trip to the Blue Hole. A lot of people say the blue hole dive is all hype and not worthwhile, but I loved it. Cave formations and sharks in one dive--what's not to like? Belize has a lot to offer so depending on how long you're there, don't miss out on the above water things wither, like the ruins, caves, etc.

I know I'm going to the rain forest and the ruins, we won't be hitting up the blue hole though. I'm kind of glad we aren't in a way, I'm not quiet ready to be down that deep. I think we're going in Glover's reef and I can't recall the other one

Glovers reef is meant to be great diving. If you're there in the summer, I believe it's whale shark season, but the best place to see them is by Placencia.

they do have great diving there. it was my first blue water trip & I have great memories.

I will just say as being a visitor take time to learn about the people, their customs, food, and their way of life.

Nite dive at Hol Chan. All the diving I did there was easy, low current if any at all, good vis, the most turtles I have ever seen. Giant groupers, eels, southern stingrays, and of course, lots of other fish. The dives were all pretty much shallow. Do take an ample supply of bug spray, we went through two cans in four days, and still came home looking like leopards. If you haven't picked a dive op, try ecologic DIVERS Dive Trips & Tours - Scuba, Snorkel, Fish, Vacation in Ambergris, Belize they are good folks and will work with you on your level of attention.

Also, I don't know about the Blue Hole, Ther seems to be two schools of thought: It's really deep and clear, sometimes many sharks, the walls are neat stalactite formations. The other thought is It's a big deep hole with boring walls and no coral, sometimes there's sharks!

I was in Belize in Jan. Ecologic is a great outfit. Check out the pics of some of the dive sites on the link in my signature. The Hol Chan Night diving is a lot of fun.

I really wanted to check out shark ray alley, but the resort we are staying with doesn't offer that package. Heh, I wish this was a vacation so I didn't have to identify every animal I look at
