Anyone have suggestions for hotel in belize. I want to make my own dive plans but need and inexpensive hotel. My wife does not dive so beach front would be nice.

I would recommend staying in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, there are several inexpensive beach front hotels, I don't know the names of any though. If you stay in town, there are lots of inexpensive restaurants, if you stay to the north, you'll have to take a water taxi that costs $7 US per person. It runs every other hour ant the trip taken about 15 minutes. We stayed at Journey's End (thet's an appropriate name) at the far north end, very isolated, good for a honeymoon, but not for a dive trip.

Make sure you only drink bottled water, and take lots of bug spray. We dove with Ecologic Divers when we were there in October and enjoyed it, but there was a recent post that said their boats were crowded and mostly new divers, so you might shop around for a dive op as well.

I did a package through Banana Beach. they had two pools and a beach front area. they did serve drinks in the beach area and had a pretty decent restaurant.

If you just want basic accommodations (and I mean REALLY basic), check out Ruby's. It is a block or so north of the airstrip in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

I was there in Oct 2006. Rooms with A/C facing the ocean were about $30.

Several dive shops are within easy walking distance. I used Protech, and was very satisfied with them.

I'm staying at Hamaniasi, they have a diving op, but it's definitely not the cheapest. Not quite sure how a Field Biology class ended up at a nice resort like this. But it has beach front, a pool, and really good food and rooms. Dive masters here are great too. There's also plenty of other stuff to do if you don't dive like rainforest trips and what not.

I was there in 1997 on an eco mission for 24 days ( only 4 days on Ambergris) and we stayed at Coconuts which had a small beach and could walk to town, but it has changed ALOT.
Going back June 1, We just rented a nice condo at Coral Bay Villa with beautiful beach for 99.00 a night, close to town, has a dock for pick up. A great website is Belize Vacations, Maps, Real Estate, Resorts, News, Hotels, Travels, Flights, Weather, Tours, gives you all the hotels, all the rates and maps of everything including grocery stores and laundry mats.

SO, we need a good dive op, want to dive walls at Turneffe and Basil Jones, and two tank reef dives.

Anybody have suggestions?

Thanks

I have never stayed there but Mayan Princess is a nice looking inexpensive hotel we have considered in the past. It is right in town but on the beach, right next to a great dive shop, small balconies that overlook the ocean. If you want to splurge a bit, we really enjoy Xanadu. Nice place, great location (far enough to be out side of town but a quick walk to the restaurants).
