high pressure hose

just returned from Oz dive trip on SPIRIT OF FREEDOM out of Cairns--second last dive--about to enter water when 2 loud bangs---blew high pressure hose in two places----it was 19 years old and bought from Dixie Divers in Florida.-----REPLACE HIGH PRESSURE HOSES EVERY 5 YEARS---they can blow underwater and then GOD knows what happens.

How much more reliable is a 5 year old hose than say a 10 year old hose? Or for that matter, a 4 year old hose than a 3 year old hose? And divers should also know what happens when an HP hose fails - you will lose gas but should have plenty of time to make a normal ascent as the HP orifice in modern 1st stages is quite small. If not, that is why you have your planned redundency.

It seems silly to replace hoses that show no sign of deterioration or failure. You did inspect that hose before the dive and during you bubble check when you entered the water - right?
