Where's the Honor

On Saturday My wife and I along with a couple of friends went to Scuba Toys for our first visit to the store. We were in such awe of all the gear they have to offer. In my distraction of all they have, I was trying on full face mask and I set my Oakley sun glasses down and forgot about them has I continued to shop. As we were leaving I returned to the area to retrieve my glasses, which were now gone. I know many bad things go on out in the world and after all they are only sunglasses, but the point is when we lose faith and trust in our fellow divers then there really isn't much else left is there.

I always make sure to turn in whatever I find, regardless of the value. I found $9 on the floor at Walmart the other day and tried to turn it in. The guy at the counter looked at me like I was retarded and told me it was mine now. I didn't feel right taking it but he wouldn't take it from me.

And I have to ask, you did ask if someone turned them in, right?

Did you say anything to the staff? Could they have been picked up and turned in? I am sure if any of the employee's found them they would have picked them up and taken them to the front desk or office.

I was at the shop yesterday from about 2-4:30 and there was a quite a few customers coming through but I would hope that any of them would have turned the glasses in.

Try to give them a shout Monday and see if they turn up.

Yes we asked the staff and they were very helpful in trying to locate them. There is no intent to imply anything against the shop. We think it is a great place. It was my fault for setting them down in the first place. I too have found a wallet on the lake that was lost by the owner 3 months prior and a camera floating at CSSP and have always turned them in. I believe doing the right thing is always the best thing.

There are folks who aren't made of the right stuff everywhere, even diving world. Not to excuse them, because there is NO excuse, but I suspect that there was something lacking in their lives well before they became divers. Hopefully, they will have occasion to learn what honor looks like. Most likely when lack thereof slaps them right back in the face.

I lost my favorite pair of Maui Jims in pursuit of an "honorable" path. My colleague said she wanted to go swimming in Cancun. She had had a few drinks, but was in reasonable shape, so I said yes. Maui Jims are on the head. Then right as a huge wave is coming our way, she tells me that she can't swim (and she grew up in the Dominican Republic). I had a choice, Melina or my Maui Jims. Darn sunglasses are in the ocean somewhere.

Walking on the beach a few months later, a pair of RayBans (nice ones) washed up in the surf. There was no one on the beach anywhere in my sight, and no one in the water. I could have left them in the water to be swept out again, but I figured maybe it was good karma being revisited upon me?

I don't think I would trade my Maui Jims for Ray Bans.

I watched No Country for Old Men this week and it really hit home. Our society has changed and the thing we know as honor is quickly disappearing. I never cease to be amazed at what people are capable and willing to do to each other.

I hear you JT, and I am in hearty agreement. But the Maui Jims were GONE, so I might as well be happy that another decent pair was returned to me by mother ocean. I recently replaced the Maui Jims with a slightly different pair, their popular sport ones which are very flexible and light. Managed to haggle my way down to 170 dollars. So all is well. Moral of the story for both the OP and myself is to put our glasses away properly.

When I have found a wallet in a place where there was nowhere to turn it in, I open it, see if I can call the person who owns it, and make arrangements for it's speedy return. If not, I would call the police. My trainer (college educated guy with LOTS of visible tats and a shaved head) recently found a wallet. He was nervous about someone even seeing him pick it up because he says his appearance leads people to make a lot of assumptions about him. He called the cops and just stood where he was without touching it. Sad that he even has to think twice about how to do the honorable thing.

That's pretty crappy that he has to go through such measures just to return someones property. I found someone's student ID the other day on my way into the gym and picked it up when I didn't see anyone around. It was pretty easy to return it since I was able to get his email address from the school directory.

And Eyewear Retainers, Belts, Lanyards, Key Rings and Optical Accessories by Croakies for Sports, Play, Fashion and Work
I have these on all of my sunglasses.

its funny that this thread should pop up,, last wedensday after class I noticed that another student left her coffee cup.. So, I picked it up and took it home with me.. after bsing with my roommate for a bit. his cousin asked if I was going to keep the cup. my reply to him was " whats the definition of integrity?" his reply, "i don't know" I informed him that it was doing the right thing even if no one is looking.... I ran into my class mate the next day and told her I would return her cup on monday. I think that the way some people raise their children these days is horrendous.
