Once again, ScubaToys demonstrates what Customer Service is all about.

Curious: The original LDS said you had to either rent or buy the gear for the open water dives....is this normal? When I went through mine, the LDS provided everything for the pool and open water dives (except fins, boots, and mask). I haven't paid too much attention to this, but I'm pretty sure everybody I know didn't have to buy or rent gear for open water dives.

Your starting to see this more and more, when I went thru my OW in 89' they supplied everything except mask, fins, snorkel and boots.

I just saw an ad for one of our LDS listing buy your gear from us and OW classes are free, free my ass, equipment is marked up 90% wtf!...Its also hard to tell if they are a dive shop, pawn shop, junk dealer or what....Last time I was in there you could buy a regular catalina 80cft alum tank for 249.00

the dive shop I did my divemaster with in San Antonio provides all the pool equipment, but the open water dives, if you don't have gear, you'll have to rent it, tanks included I believe...

that being said, the dive shop I did my OW with in Las Vegas, provided everything except mask/fins/snorkel/boots... both had similar course prices...

obviously the shop in San Antonio was making more money as they got two days worth of gear rental out of the deal as well (or gear purchase)...

When we got OW certified, all rental gear was included except mask, snorkel, and fins.

Joe is definitely a class act, I've been to the shop twice now, (I live in SOCAL but travel a lot), and he has gone out of his way to give me great deals. I can't believe that LDS is still in business, they should have refunded ALL your money IMO.

$450 is also kind of a rip-off, I think. I see it a lot of places for $300 or so.

Frankly, I'd demand all my money back. In addition, if he didn't, I'd write a letter to the agency he represents and complain to them (I probably would do it anyway). I've heard of some pretty lousy LDS practices, but this 1 is about the worst I've ever heard. About the only thing you might have done differently was to see if they would price match, or at least come close. But hindsight is 20-20, and that still doesn't excuse them from shoddy business practices.

Every time I hear stories like this, I'm really thankful for my LDS. Mine will try to meet prices elsewhere for the same or comparable item, But they don't get upset if I buy something I want that they don't carry. Like my Oxycheq Mach V wing that I got from ST, or my Aeris Computer that I bought from ST, or my Oxycheq raider I light that I bought from ST, or my . . . . well, you get the picture.

Hopefully, you have another option in Midland for buying air.

Wow... another horror story..
I bought gear from an online place (before I knew ScubaToys existed) and had no problem at all taking classes at a LDS here...
simply amazing ... Hope there are other shops in Midland, it would be nice to have a local place , even if you buy strictly from ST.
