ok, so new posters

I got hammered on my 1st few posts. Called a couple fish wrong, didn't use spell check....rambled on a report. This is in retrospect to the Attire thread below. I stayed away, for a long time...... then I realized........it's only the internet.......... insecure divers or , new divers, eager to learn from members, wanting to gain knowledge from the forum, cower, and leave, this site, when flaming begins.

How do we expect to gain new members when this happens?

This is evident from new posters saying........"been lurking for a long while"

just saying..........

maybe it's me...........dunno

I've posted incorrect, and / or dumb things. (I've gone back and deleted many dumb statements).

But, unless you get back in time to change the post, then once you click that button...it's done.

I got flamed a few times because I posted things in regard to fitness, and also about technical diving. But, in retrospect, it was not really any of my business.

I think that the people here are nicer than on other forums.

Yeah, I think it's just you. You seem to see every post that doesn't say "That was a GREAT post!" as an insult.

You probably even think this was a "mean" post against you, when in reality it's called constructive criticism.

I went back and read your first posts, and all the follow ups to them, and didn't see anything... but I didn't read all your posts and threads. If anyone is rude out here, just report it with the report post button, or pm me and we'll make sure people play nice!

Every forum on the internet has its own "flavor." On this forum, there is a bit of pedantry with regard to grammar, punctuation and general use of the English (American) language. Do we require you be able to quote the Chicago Manual of Style chapter and verse before posting? No. A basic comprehension of punctuation, spelling and the general grammar rules is preferred, though.

To your statement about "lurking" for awhile before posting, perhaps you're new to this internet thing, or message boards. My background is from the days of the dial up BBS where you ALWAYS lurked to LEARN that board's character and personality. If you just jumped into a thread and posted your two cents with no comprehension of the board's dynamic, you were apt to turn into newbie flambe. I suppose that's a long winded way of saying: it's POLITE to lurk before posting. It allows you to join the dynamic of the group.

Put another way, would you walk into a Lamb of God [hard metal] concert wearing a Stetson, western shirt, bolo, jeans so tight everyone can see the veins in your bulge and what brand of dip you carry, and **** kickers? No. You'd look like a fool and, probably, get your gluteous beaten for the effort.

At least we're not as, how do I say this nicely, exclusionary as some boards out there. The Deco Stop, for instance, rather prides itself on the fact that you need to have a firm grasp on your genitals before you post.

Were members a bit harsh on the OP from the thread you reference as causing this one? Probably. But, just like with TV, I live by the principle that if I don't like what I'm looking at, I'm free to navigate away and go back to something more appropriate for my age. Alas, I tend to wear my big boy asbestos underwear, and don't take issue to some gentle ribbing from people I've never met, in most cases. To each their own.

Very nicely put LaCroix42. I think for the most part this is a very nice board but I think we want EVERYONE, even new posters, to figure out and play by the rules.

I have on occasion noted that a new poster has what I felt was unjustly flamed asking a simple question that while most of us on the board know, but obviously they didn't. In those cases it's been one or two more opinionated posters with an apparent agenda to get across. A PM to the new poster is usually been handled politely and those persons have continued to post.

As for ribbing from LC, you ought to see what happens when you meet him in person...

Hey now, I never fire first. I just tend to respond to small arms fire with an ArcLight flight.
