Nekton Dive Puerto Rico
We will be diving on this boat out of Puerto Rico. Staying in town the night before. Just found out they won't pick us up at the hotel, have to go back to airport, another cab ride, and no fun, a lousy way to start a trip. I guess we have to expect the cattle boat mentality!!
Is this typical of others experience with this company? |

They've always had a set pick up spot for their shuttle vans. Belize was a hotel and Ft. Lauderdale was the airport. Not surprised they don't do special hotel pick ups in Puerto Rico.
We've spent 3 weeks on a Nekton boat (1 week and a 2 week back-to-back), diving was always first rate, food was good, cabins roomy, and service always good. The boats are working dive boats, and if you keep that in mind, the outward condition won't bother you so much. Also, Rorqual has recently passed her USCG inspection, which is quite rigorous, so at least you know she's a safe vessel. Have a GREAT time and post a report when you get home.

Depends on the location and the company. In Cayman, we arrived a day early and spent a night in a hotel on 7 mile beach and had to cab it to the Cayman Aggressor. Not a big deal though. In Bali, Peter Hughes has 3 areas they pick up from. If you stay out of those areas, you'll have to cab it. With limited vehicles and staff, it's hard for the crew to be every where.
In most cases, the folks who pick you up at the airport are part of the crew for the week and they're all busting their butt to get the boat ready for the guests to board. From the time folks disembark to the time the next group of guests board is about 8 hours and there is a lot to do. I've never dove with Nekton, but I'd imagine their running under a similarly tight turn around.

I was staying at the Old San Juan Sheraton and they made it very clear before the trip they pick up only at the Post Office at the San Juan Airport.....you cost to Old San juan is $22 to $25 each way.

Car Service
I have an opinion on this from a dive shop owner's perspective. Providing car service is usually not cost effective. However, I will provide some transportation for customers who are either doing a lot of business with me, or whose sole purpose of their trip here was to come dive with my shop.
I guess I'll also pick my parents up at the airport when they come visit... maybe ![]() |
