Uwatec Smart Pro IrDA Problems

My laptop has a built in IrDA interface, that I use for a wireless printer. So, I know that the interface is working. I have picked up a signal from the dive computer, once, very briefly. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Do you think that the external IrDA to USB connectors would resolve this issue? Do I need to stand on one leg while adjusting the dive computer, laptop, and rabbit ears simultaneously? Any input would be appreciated.

I've heard the Uwatec Prime Computers have had problem with IRDA, but in saying that i have a prime and haven't had any issue. Turn on the computer, line up the IRDA and then start Smarktrak. If your PC speakers are on you should hear the IRDA automatically startup and an Icon appear in the system tray.

I have a SmartCom and I bought an infarred reader online from staples for around $35 which was much less than the $100 that uwatec wants for theirs. The only downside is that I have to "aim" it at the infarred reciever spot on my console while it downloads but it works great for me. From what I have found is that you have to aim it at the reciever spot on your dive computers console in order to get the information.

This is quite true. You have to work to get it lined up sometimes with some of the other versions of IRDA readers. A friend of mine had to hold the computer and reader face to face to get his to work. His IRDA reader cost $15, so he figured it was worth the trade-off.

There was a recall on that particular model from scuba pro. If it is the dive computer and its serial number is the range that was recalled, then they might get you a new dive computer. Do a google search on smart pro recall.

Thats what I had to use because my Uwatec Smartcom wasn't working with the IrDA built in the laptop. I had to go out and buy the IrDA standalone that connected to the USB to get it to work.

Spend $15 and try an external receiver. It's entirely possible your IR port is just really finicky on the lining up thing, as opposed to an issue with the computer itself.

And regardless, it's a whole lot cheaper and easier to troubleshoot the issue with a cheap external USB dongle than to talk Uwatec into warranty service on your dive computer, so I'd try that first.

Thanks for the replies, called Uwatec and its not one of the recalled ones. That makes me happy, did pick up an external IrDA (cheap 10 dollar one) and it works great. Thanks for the information.

I got a Smart Z as part of the upgrade from and old Air X.

I think it is great that UWATEC dont require an expensive cable, and that there is to hook up with the computer so it is all sealed.

But I did have the hassle of connecting it, and having to line it up with the computer directly. But eventually it worked.

One suggestion is that you can buy a usb cable that is like an extension cable so that you dont have to put the uwatec in the back of the computer. Might make it easier when aiming/aligning the computer!
