I personally didn't like the one I saw on the Suunto Cobra2 at my LDS. It's all laid out flat like E........S..........W.........N and the markers aren't very clear to me. I'm sure they make more sense when you've actually gone out and used them though. They also put a drain on the battery, but you don't have to worry about keeping it level.

I've got one of the old Uwatec's, seems to work just fine... although it has developed a small air bubble. They don't sell them anymore, don't know why, but you may be able to find a used one around.

there are, but I'd try before getting one. Like pretend to navigate your way around the shop or something. I can't even stand the digital compasses in our cars, seem counterintuitive. An analog one makes so much more sense to me, cheaper, and it doesn't need batteries.

They mostly suck, is the problem. There is at least one really good one, apparently, but it's stuck inside a $2k computer: Uwatec's Galileo Sol.
Stick with a good analog compass like the SK-7. Better all around. Unless, perhaps. you get the Galileo Sol. But even then I'd feel better with an rock-solid reliable analog backup. |

[quote7061]Bring a "real" compass.[/quote]
Be careful if you do. Don't put the compasses close together or they'll affect each other and screw up the reading. BTW, there is no such thing as a digital compass. The readout is digital becasue of an electronic sensor reading the needle pointing of a very tiny compass and displaying the reading digitally. In reality, most digital compasses are not very accurate and are suceptible to tilt errors and mis-readings. There is a GPS device touted as a digital compass because it develops a direction of travel for you based on movement. It gives you noting when its not moving and it won't work under water, under roffs, in buildings, etc. Ian California Land Surveyor....
