Actually I think Mac's have been outselling PC's for about the last 3 quarters....and when you look at profitability Mac totaly beats the heck outa PC's.......I own an Iphone and Ipod (both 3g and standard iphone) but not a Mac and gotta say after using an iphone I am tempted to buy a mac...It has such a basic interface that at the same time has very few limitations. I really think you will see more and more Mac converts over the next three or four years, and then it will hit a rough spot as it did in the '90's!

Both.

The Palm Address book has 4 custom fields that are commonly used to put in little short notes (a word or two, like a spouse name, cross streets, business hours, etc). There is also an actual Notes field where more long form info can be held. I usually put old addresses (for historical tracking) into the notes section. I also often have shorthand directions (I-405 S to Wilshire (L) Wilshire to Sepulveda Blvd. (R) Sepulveda to Washington (3rd little street) (r)) for directions to a place I had to look up how to get there and don't go often enough to remember. I keep those in the notes section for that contact. For clients, I have password-protected entries that have lists of usernames and passwords, so I can administer to their computer systems after hours without needing to call for assistance every 5 minutes.

I have a LOT of such little notes, and over 1000 contacts. No way do I want to have to go through that stuff by hand... and I don't know any other way to deal with things like the custom fields, since they have no direct place to go when translating over the Apple Address book. I've also read that the Notes section of the Address Book on the Mac allows a lot more text than the iPhone does, so longer entries will get truncated.

Finally, the actual Memo application. I have lots of little memos. Think of them like postits for the cell phone: I have shopping lists for various stores (things to pick up at the grocery store, at CostCo, and Home Depot, etc... stuff that doesn't warrant a trip just for those little things, but should be picked up next time I'm there... and I'd never remember with out it). I have a little mini text listing of ingredients for my favorite mixed drinks, to help decide what I want if I'm at a bar. I have a list of the rankings of various poker hands, and what beats what. I have a list of birthstones for each month. I have model numbers for various computer and stereo components that I own, so I can look up which I have and thus which part is needed if I'm picking up an add-on or something somewhere. My personal "wish list" for scuba gear, for electronics, for camping gear, for general stuff. A list of DVDs I own (500+) so I don't accidentally buy a duplicate. Christmas gift lists for close friends and family... stuff that occurs to me would be a good gift for someone, I jot down to save angst during the holidays. A list of local dive sites and directions. The list goes on and on.

I carry a LOT of little bits of data with me. And I'm not going to move to a phone that forces me to suddenly leave half of that info behind.

Perfect address book/contact translation is a MUST. (Actually, it doesn't even have to all go into the perfect little fields... but it does need to get over there, SOMEWHERE!) A memo application, that gets backed up and can be accessed both on the phone and on the computer (to update, reference, etc.) is a MUST.

I really want to move over to the iPhone. It's killing me that it's not quite ready for me, though.

Well, that's a pretty big need and I can see it being a sticking point. I bought a G4 Mac that I can run OS X Leopard on so I can develop software for the iphone on. Not sure what's involved in it, I did a few small things for the Palm Pilot and they claim the iphone SDK is much easier to work with. My old G3 mac can't run the SDK so I had to upgrade so to speak. G4's are pretty cheap.

Of course Apple does things I don't like, for instance they limit the CPU speeds and the OS won't install if the CPU is too slow. I'd prefer it to install like the Microsoft OS, if I want a slug I want the ability to have a slug. Apple wants you to have a computer that will run it nicely, sigh.

Still...

I own a Mac G3 right now, so I know what it can do. I also have for years run Unix and also Linux systems in preference to Windows. I am well aware of the Unix software which OS X pretty much is. It's not based on their old OS9 which was fast and really simple, but worked.

I like it. But, the other handhelds have multiplatform support and I thought now the iphone would, but we're lucky that they even allow third party developers now.

There is an application called Dive Planner.

Dive Planner

And I've actually used the nitrox tools to calculate my EAD once for a sub 30% mix.

I'm working with a guy (beta testing) an app that will allow you to plan your dive depths, time, gases, deco and other things.. Even for CCRs.

Not sure when he will release it but, it's shaping up nicely!

Otherwise, I have no idea what I am talking about... (aka, don't PM me for a copy of it. :P)

Michael

EDIT: Also, the Topic should be iPhone 3G. Not G3.

No iPhone for me, AT&T has lousy coverage in my area, never mind the monthy cost. But I was hoping an iPod touch might be an option when I decide to replace my latest Palm, since they don't really seem to be advancing that platform. But I have so much info on my Palm with no equivalent apps or places for the data on the iPod touch, and I rely on syncing it too. I wonder when if ever it will get there.

So, you switched over? Did you get all your notes to transfer?

I plan on getting an iPhone next year, when I return from overseas. A friend has one of the older, original ones, and that sold me on them.
