I doubt a water leak. Even though the conductivity of fresh
water is substantially lower than salt water, it will still carry a current. A water leak in the battery compartment would create a short, albeit with some resistance, but it could still completely drain the battery and more than likely cause the battery to leak. Here is a link with some information about water conductivity. Water Conductivity You can see that salt water is 100 to 1000 times more conductive than tap/drinking water but still conducts. The higher the ion content the easier it is for current to flow. Salt increases the ion content. Even though there is no (at least relatively little) salt in "fresh" water it still has enough ions to allow current to flow. Water in the battery compartment is a bad thing even it is fresh water. --- bill |

I had a similar issue with my Aeris XR2. I was still using the original battery after about 1.5 yrs., when during the SI, the battery icon would show 2 bars and flash. It would be ok when first turned on, when diving, but occured during SIs. It finally started to bug me to no end and I went to Walmart and got a new one (battery that is). It's been working "correctly" now for the last 5 dives. I think it was the battery in this instance. I second the comment about a newly purchased battery not neccessarily being "good".

Why, and how, do you short the battery terminals? Thanks!
