If you download to a PC, can the files be transferred to a mac? or do the computers come with specific dive viewing software?

jTrak can download Uwatec Smart-series computers directly to your Mac, you just need the IR adapter.

DiveLog can download Suunto computers directly to the Mac as well.

Not sure if there is a Mac option for Oceanic, off-hand, or the N2ition or DiveRite computers.

Edit: No-go on Oceanic, unless there is a third-party option I haven't seen:

I WANT TO DOWNLOAD THE OCEANLOG BUT HAVE A MAC:
Unfortunately, we do not offer a Macintosh version of the Oceanlog download program, as the program is written using the Microsoft Access database which is not compatible with the Macintosh operating system. However, it is possible to run the Oceanlog program on a Macintosh using one of the commercially available PC-emulation programs, such as Parallels or Boot Camp, which sets up a PC environment within the Mac operating system. While we have not evaluated either program and cannot endorse them, we have received feedback from end-users in the field that this approach has been successful.

@imcertified!: Most manufacturers of PC-downloadable dive computers provide free software to view/edit/add notes while logging the dives. I believe that some of their proprietary software permits export of the raw dive data in CSV or UDCF formats. In theory, it should be possible to download the dive to the proprietary software, export it to CSV or UDCF, and then mess with the profile on your mac. What a hassle, though!

As a programmer I can tell you what most diver computer manufacturers just don't spend a lot on the dive logging software. Even the PC software is not great. I'm guessing there just isn't enough money in it. i.e. I can code for Fortune 500 companies and make $100,000/year or I can write dive log software and make $20,000, once. I might be able to get another $5000 for doing bug fixing but most manufacturers are smart enough to negotiate that into the initial contract.

The place where good software comes is from people who get a dive computer, see there is no good software, write there own and release it as Shareware. If there is a large enough community, open source might happen. Right now I just don't have the time but I have been bugging Sherwood to give me information on their PC interface. They directed me to the company that actually wrote the software. They weren't really helpful.

If I have time to hack the thing myself, I might write some software. My design will be modular and probably Java based. This way it will be easy to code (good development tools for Java), work on multiple platforms and I can write modules for each dive computer. Obviously, I start with my Sherwood Wisdom.
