dive rite or cochran you tell me

ok so i am late to diving and i finally got all my gear well most of my gear. i am lookiing for a wrist mounted computer and lots of people been telling me that cochran and dive rite nitrox are great computers. but than again you hear alot of garabage that they aren't that great.

like some feed back on a good starter computer that will take me into beginner techie and for instructorship

i am all ears, well mostly ears!!!

I have never thought much of the Cochran....I do like the Dive Rite line and the Oceanic lines of computers. Both are user friendly easy to get service....and you have a good selection to pick from....cost is pretty fair for the market. I perl. use the Dive Rite Nitek Duo's wrist computer.

IMO regarding the Cochran it would depend on model. I don't like the plain versions at all, the best they make on the other hand is nice but costs too much for what it is and what you have to add on in order to equal some of the others out there, VR3 for example.

Hi, I’m in the market for a new computer as well, mainly because I will be taking the advanced nitrox class early next year, one thing that got my eye from your post is that you mention that you want a computer to take you into beginner techie, how far into techie are you considering going? Accelerated decompression and diving with nitrox? trimix? Defining your goals may help you decide which computer may be best for you; also there are other things to consider like air integration.
As far as myself I don't see trimix diving in my near future so I ruled out expensive trimix computers like the VR3. That left me with nitrox computers which allow you to switch mixes while diving, here you are going to have a great deal of computers to choose from. I decided on a TUSA IQ700 which is exactly the same computer as the nitek duo, but has better warranty (2 year) and customer support.
If you have already decided to go with Nitek or Cochran I would favor Nitek, but I would recommend you look at other brands before choosing.

About 5 years ago, I bought the Cochran Commander Nitrox wrist computer. I personally haven't had any trouble with it, but have heard horror stories from other people about Cochran customer support.... The one thing that I really don't like about it is the fact that it has 3 metal "pins" on the side, which you have to make contact with a knife or some sort of metal to change the settings.. It can be a real PITA, especially on a boat. The LDS was really pushing these as "the computer of the future". Yeah, right... They saw a sucker coming! Good luck with your purchase!
