Veo 180

I'm in the process of updating gear; I was running an old Oceanic DataMax. At the time I got it they were rated really well. Although I went to a computer kicking and screaming, it was convenient. I'm considering one of the Pelagic family of computers the Sherwood or Oceanic as a replacement. I have an opportunity to pickup a new VEO 180 at a great price. I know this model was discontinued but wondering folks opinions who own one. Also, anyone offer and info on the difference between the 180 and the new 250.

You too? I went at least 33 years before I started diving with a computer. the first I used was a Veo 250-I liked it pretty well, still don't fully trust the things though. I am currently using a Geo and like it pretty well. From what I have heard, there is not a lot of difference between the 180 and the 250.

From looking at Oceanic's web site, the biggest difference is that the 250 has a few other programming features and set them up in two set modes instead of one (more like the Geo) and the 250 has a simulator mode where the 180 doesn't. Personally, they both look like good computers.

BTW, if you need a manual: http://www.oceanicworldwide.com/pdf/12-2621-r03.pdf

Thanks Chief. Yes, it was at least 18 or 19 years for me. I don't fully trust them either, but as I said, they are convenient, and as long as you still use tables, they make a nice accessory. Again, really appreciate the information, figure the VEO 180 has to be quite a bit better than my old DataMax and it served all my needs for years. More features usually just means more menus which usually means less user friendly.

I have a 180NX that I purchased used with a 'Swiv' console. I assume the 180 you mentioned is a Nitrox computer.

No complaints. Jettisoned the console and have it wrist mounted now.

Simple to use although in lower light conditions it is difficult for me to read... but then, so is everything else.

I will add another vote for the 180. This is a really good computer at a great price. I bought one as my backup for tech diving. It was cheaper than the Uwatec bottom timer and it gives me deco info as well.

Just purchased 2 of them, decided to replace my wife's console too. Unfortunately ST could not get anymore of these as they have been discontinued. ST is great though, they offered to match the price with a VEO 100nx. The VEO 100nx fills the slot of the old VEO 100 and VEO 180. I'd have gone for it but the 100nx does not have OceanGlo and SmartGlo backlight feature and the VEO 180 did.

Thanks again to everyone who replied!

I have one too, great computer, have not had any problems with it,easy to use and too see with these old eyeballs. I also dove without computer for over 20 years and after using one for about the last 6 years or so,I would not want to not use one anymore.

Yep, once you have one they make a nice convenient backup to tables and a dive plan.
