I am looking at non AI computers. Charles R, when you say SPG no console type depth/spg do you mean like this

http://www.scubatoys.com/store/detai...DUCT_ID=SCA110

I am still learning the wordage for everything!
Yep that's what he meant. I have that exact SPG and it is very small and compact. Get a clip or retractor and clip it to your BC... that's it.

Check out the Suunto Gecko as far as computers go. Not real expensive and very feature-rich.

I too dive with a Oceanic VT Pro (which is a wrist mount wireless AI), but I do dive with a SPG/depth console. The console is what I bought before I started diving with the AI computer and I like to have it just incase. I have it on a retractor so it is out of the way. The only time I need to mess with it is when I get in and out of my BC. If my computer should ever go south then I have it to look at, although that would be the end of the dive anyway. I have thought about just taking it off because I am always diving with someone else and if the computer should happen to fail I could just follow my buddy (like it has already been mentioned). I just like the feeling of having a backup, and it is not in the way...

thanks all & thanks jo for clear that up for me. I will check out the that recommendation. Too bad ST isn't selling the Veo 180 anymore. It seemed to have many fans according to the thread I searched.

Nicole,

I think that some of your confusion with this thread is coming from the termanology. An SPG is what was pictured, a Console is what you refered to in your first post. (ie an SPG PLUS depthguage/compus).

In answer to your original question, very few RECREATIONAL divers who have a non AI (wireless air-integrated) wrist computer use anything other than a stand alone SPG unless, like mdwestgrl, it is a legacy of previous equipment.

I have had a couple of computer failures. Non AI so I had a SPG. I also wear a watch with a depth gauge feature. Did not thumb the dives.

I use a wrist-mount non-AI VEO 250 computer. The Cressi mini-depth/pressure gauge console serves as a back up. I once had an AI computer totally fail on me before hitting the water on a dive and I've enjoyed having the back-up ever since then.

I used to dive with a ScubaPro Uwatec Smart Com. It was bulky as all get out but very reliable and it did the math for me, making dive planning simple.
Then I went through my DIR stage and used a SPG and Uwatec Bottom Timer/Depth Gauge on my right forearm. Simple enough but I had to do my own planning and dive tables.
Now I got an Aeris Elite T3 hoseless wrist mount and like the simplicity but find I still dive plan and use the tables as a safety precaution to check the computer.
Also, thus far, on every trip I take along the SPG mounted on the hose and Depth Gauge/ Bottom Timer as backups in case the computer malfunctions I do not have to rent something or give up diving for the rest of the trip. (I keep the SPG and Bottom Timer in my dive bag and ready to take over if the computer fails, I dont dive with both)
So, to answer your question, you may want to try different methods before buying something and then finding you wish you had something else.

yea.. no mater what you wanna make sure you have a analog SPG. i have one in my dive bag should my computer give out htat is AI, i can switch it out and keep goin... also that SPG has a basic oceanic comp, just for depth time and temp...

i agree with No Misses reasoning. if your computer fails, then you go up whether you have SPG or not. if you pay attention to your tank pressure often, then you'd know how much air (approximately) you have if your DC dies. if you have a back up SPG then you can rely on your buddy computer if you had the same profile. some people would say - never rely on anyone's computer but yourown. the bottom line - SPG is a good thing to have.
