My new console
While I prefer wrist instruments, I decided to designate my old $10 compass and new bottom timer to console mounted backup duty. My homemade system is not pretty, but it's functional. I used a ST hose mount for the bottom timer and an old, cut-up SPG boot for the compass. All instruments swivel fine along with the SPG.
This got me thinking that the current console design could really be more compact. IMO, they should sell 1.5" diameter glass and brass SPG's with a flat bottom timer at the back, and a small, flat compass on top. That would rock for backup, or even for primary if that's all you need. Anyway, here are the pics of what I did: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I attached it with just one zip tie, but there's also a piece of cave line connecting all instruments and the boltsnap for backup. |

They won't fall out of the boots, and even if the zip tie or compass boot material breaks the cave line is unlikely to break simultaneously. That said I did recently see a boot that performs the same function sold by NESS: Northeast Scuba Supply - Online Catalog - Dive Reels
and here's another for 3-gauge boot that's similar to what I tried to put together: Dive Rite Instrument Consoles |
