DataMask?
Ok, has anyone tried the Oceanic DataMask yet? It seems like it would be great and at the cost some of the computers now it's not too far off. I just can't get passed spending $1500 on a mask...? Any personal reviews would be great.
And just for the record I'm currently only diving recreational but plan on going into tech/deep/wreck/cave diving in the near future. |

I don't think it would make a useful piece of tech gear. You can get a really nice mixed gas computer for about the same price.
Delta P VR3 Dive Computer, Computers: Nitrox, Delta P, Delta P VR3 Dive Computer I would be afraid of losing a $1500 mask. Also, if you use your computer to plan and log your dives you have to carry your mask around during your surface interval. Having said that I have a friend that loves his Datamask and uses it for open water diving with no issues. In the end it is personal preference but I would not consider this technical gear. |

Not only would I not want the datamask for technical diving, I'm not convinced I'd want a dive computer at all. Like most deco divers I know, I plan my dives ahead of time, and execute them using a bottom timer. Since I have to bring exactly the mixes and quantities of gasses I need to for the dive, I don't want to calculate my dive plan on the fly like I might with a recreational dive.
That said, heads-up info is pretty cool. If the Datamask has gauge mode, I might consider it, but I don't think either the slight advantage or "cool toy factor" justifies the high cost for me. For the same price, you could get a bottom timer and a nice set of new manifolded doubles, and you might even have enough left for an AL40 deco bottle.

Hola guys,
Not gonna type the whole thing again, but here's the link: HUD Mask I have Techie diver-wrecker buddies that love them, some that don't like them and a few that are appathetic to the subject of the DataMask, so... try them and make your own call I guess. Dive Safe! DiverJoe |
