Help-

I have found a used Oceanic DataTrans Plus online that I am interested in buying, but I have never owned a dive computer before and need some input on this model. Has anyone had any experience with one? If so what do you think?

It's quite old for a dive computer, 8 years old. If you want to read the owners manual look here. I don't know if I'd get it or not, depends on price. It was a very expensive dive computer and at the time nice, but now it's not so high end.

Matt's right, 8 years is very old. If you decide to buy it, you should ask the seller how many times have the computer been used, the battery replace, how many times it has been serviced and etc. If he is selling at $400 or so, I would just go with a wrist computer with a gauge or save money and get the VT3 or atom2 or Uwatec.

And if you did manage to buy it, you should have your LDS check it out, then try using it in the pool before heading out to the ocean, lake, or a river.

Personally, I would rather get a circle shape computer like the VT3 or the Atom2. I wouldn't even use the SmartZ or the Smart Tech.

I've finished reading the owners manual. What you've found if priced really well is a nice enough computer. It's a wireless AI unit that does Nitrox up to 50%, one mix.

So for the most part now it's hard to place in a lineup because you have either those computers well above it, or well below it. Wireless AI now means the Atom 2 or the VT3. Size comparisons would say VT3 which is way more computer than this one is. Both are pretty expensive, the same computers can be had in Aeris brand, same computer different name.

It's hard to say what I'd pay other than not a lot. From what I can tell it was made for a few years which means it might be 5 to 8 years old, that would be my guess anyhow.

To be honest, I like the display and some features I wish I had now, but I wouldn't trade my VT3 on it. If it's the one on Ebay, I'm not interested in the least. I'd buy a VT3 instead.
