I am assuming that is what you are talking about, because there is no way I can feel bad about 60lbs of lobster. (I'm one of the worse ones remember ) |

I must have seen the same lobster when I was there in 2008. It was huge. In fact it was so big that the dive masters came overt to see it and began taking pictures. They marked the spot and called in to other divers about this lobster. It made quite an impression.

We just got back from Coz. last week also. We think we saw the same lobster at Palancar. It was easily 5 or 6 times larger than any lobster we have ever seen in our 23+ years of diving. Didn't have my camera on that dive so I didn't get any pictures. So you are not imagining things, he's there and he's HUGE. We also saw a king crab on that dive that had arms 3 feet across. I'm thinking someone is dumping steroids into the water.

the largest lobster caught, on record was 44lbs 2oz, off the coast of N.S, I think 1977. Interesting thing about them, scientists don't know how long they live, as they don't breakdown mechanically, and continue to grow all their lives. A 2lb (cold water) lobster would be roughly 5 yrs, then growth slows from there. Scientists estimate age by size, so they figured this 1 around 100, and suspect a 150yr old could be possible, although the bigger they get, the harder to forage for food unseen by predators. It's suspected lobsters don't die naturally, but by predation. The older they get, the more fertile they become. A lobster (cold water) this size is indeed inedible, so leaving them to reproduce is best. Don't forget, if they lose limbs, they regenerate. They have to leave their shell to grow, and the new shell is a loose fit for the 1st season, the reason that sometimes when eating lobster, there seems to be alot of water inside, and the shell is still softish as it hasn't fully calcified. We've seen HUGE ones here, perhaps 3' tip of tail-tip of claws................interesting beasties
