Almost there (Doubles)

Well I bought my doubles a few weeks back (they are split up at the moment) but I did not have everything else that I needed to dive them. They came with a DIN only manifold and all of my regs are Yoke except for my pony reg, I did not have a doubles wing, and I did not have a send 1st stage to use. I was just going to use my wifes reg because she will not be diving this year (hopefully she will be pregnant!).

Well I found a good deal on a used Sherwood Blizzard on Ebay (I currently use the Maximus). I won that auction and got that at the end of last week sometime. I found a nice used Zeagle Manta wing on Scubaboard that I just got yesterday. I originally wanted a donut doubles wing, but could not pass up this deal. I figured if a lot of other divers are using a horseshoe wing I can too. Then yesterday I ordered two DIN adaptes from Scubatoys which should be here tomorrow.

I am so excited to start diving these things. I am actually looking forward to the frustration of trying to leave to dive all over again. There is a new Quarry opening up about 30 min from my house, so that will be my playground for a while. I have a friend of mine that is going to help me along in the learning process.

I do not do any tech diving yet. I am thinking about staring to get into some tech in about a year or so. I just want to dive them in a recreational setting for this year to get use to them.

My wife thinks I am an absolute maniac for being so excited about this.

Any advice anyone can pass along my way would be greatly appreciated.

Have a good one...

Phil

Congrats! I have a friend that's going to allow me to borrow her LP95s until I get my LP108s in. I just sold my MK17 set and about to (hopefully) sell my MK25 setup but, I have a really good deal coming up on 5 DiveRites. So hopefully after the cruise next week, I'll be jumping into the pool with the LP95s.

I might recommend that you start out in the shallow part of the quarry. I'm going to have my dive buddy, ungeared in the 3' part of the pool with me on my first few tries. Just in case I'm over weighted or something else goes wrong.

Good luck and post reports. I'll do the same for you.

Phil.... I knew you were close...have fun and enjoy dude!!

After a few dives in a familiar shallow site of just practice and dialing in your trim you will be having a blast.

I will post reports for sure. This new quarry is supposed to open the first weekend of April. We will see if they have everything together by then. I sure hope so. The problem that I have is that I work almost every Sat night. I do not usually get home until around 1am, and most dive spots are a few hours away. It is hard to do get up early on a Sun drive 3 hours, dives 2 or 3 times and drive 3 hours home. So this will be nice to get to on a Sun for a few dives.

LP 108's is what I was thinking about buying if I bought new. I just happened to get a good deal on a used set of HP 120's.

Have fun bro!

Very good! I know the feeling of having to drive 3+ hours away to dive. That's why I'm starting out in the pool. Once I get pretty good in the deep end (8'), I'll eventually start taking the doubles with me to my dive sites that are 3+ hours away.

Nothing wrong with HP120s. My dive buddy has a set of them but, he's going to use them as singles. I like the idea of LP108s (LP tanks in general: I don't recommend anyone else to do this.) because I can get a lot more air in them. The tanks are rated at 2400psi with a +10% over fill.

2400 X .10 = 240
2400 + 240 = 2640

So at 2640psi I would get 108cuft of air out of each tank.

Now, if I had my LDS fill my tanks to 3000psi...

108 / 2640 = .040
.040 X 3000 = 122

So with an over fill to 3000psi, my 108cuft of air turns into 122.72cuft of air.

Now, say I'm in cave country and I get a fill to 3500 (equivalent to to your HPs fill).

108 / 2640 = .040
.040 X 3500 = 140

So with 3500psi in my LP108s, I'll have roughly 140cuft of air.

108 X 2 = 216cuft of air at 2640 (standard fill)
140 X 2 = 280cuft of air at 3500 (over fill)

HP tanks at 3500psi is standard so with the HP120s, you'd only get 120cuft of air. THAT's why I like the LP tanks.

Good luck and dive safe. (and don't follow my example....EVER. :P)

Michael

No way. I'm TOO broke for that... For the 5K I'd spend on the CCR, I could buy another doubles setup (all the gear) and possibly a X-scooter.

skdvr, don't listen to him! :P

It is funny that you should say that...

After I bought my drysuit my wife said "Well, at least I do not have to listen to you talk about that any more. That should be it for a while on the big gear purchases." Then came the doubles! Here is what she said after that purchase "OK!, now you have to be done!" Then I had to buy all the associated gear to go along with the doubles. She then says "OK, seriously there can't be anything else that you need" I just told her that the next thing on the list would be a rebreather. She just gave me the LOOK that needed no words...

Someday if I progress that far I see one in my future... It intrigues me. That is for sure.

Congrats on the good deals on your doubles gear. I just got my doubles regs last week, and am looking to get my wing and of course the tanks themselves soon. It's exciting getting new toys, and working on getting better at playing with them.

I love coming home each night and finding a new package sitting in the house ready for me to open up. My wife laughs at me because she says my face lights up like a kid a Christmas when I see the box with my name on it...

What can I say?
