Sure... since it's nearly as easy (for those not diving a vintage double hose reg) to set them up as redundant, and since it isn't hard to see why redundancy is good, lots of people (myself included) decide to take advantage of the extra reliability doubles can provide if configured that way.

It doesn't have to be... older steel tanks like 72s can be had cheap, and with an isolator manifold and bands they'd still be comparable in price to a new steel single tank, if not cheaper. You'd also have DIN fittings, so the O-ring connections would be more secure. There's no good reason I'm aware of to use 2 SPGs, and an extra first stage by itself isn't all that costly.

No doubt... with or without an isolator manifold, twin 72s are a nice way to dive.

There you go, forgetting the cool factor again.

Captain & I both dive vintage gear, although he probably uses his more than I do. There is a growing community of vintage divers. Some of them have forgotten more about scuba and scuba equipment than many will ever know. And I include myself in with the many. But we get many questions from curious people. Sometimes the questions are more about how can we so @%$&)@! stupid to use this gear. Many of these type questions seem to come from Tech divers. Now I'm not against tech diving, and I have taken tech classes, and have a lot of gear that many would consider tech. But to say there is only 1 way of doing things, and it's their way just rubs me the wrong way. I'm not suggesting you think this way, but it's just the attitude of some divers and even dive operators.

Well, I've recently realized that one of those yoke doubles manifold will probably be the only way that I'll be able to double up my vintage 72's with the tapered pipe threads. I have yet to see a doubles manifold with tapered pipe threads.
Anyway, I'll probably give it a shot pretty soon.
