Loose STA

I just put together my first BP/W setup. The only thing I am having trouble with is the STA is loose. I dove it in the pool to check everything and with a AL80 the tank wiggles side to side about 1/2". The STA is tightened down all the way with the bolts through the BP. There is no more give in the bolts to be tightened further. Where is this slack coming from? Any suggestions?

This is the STA I have: Hollis Gear: Single Tank Adapter

Are you sure that straps a threaded correctly and are not loosening up on you when they get wet?

If the straps were loose, one would imagine the tank would fall out, not just wiggle.

Are you sure you have the thing assembled correctly? Take some good pictures of the setup and post them here, and we can give you a much better idea as to your exact problem.

If you can post close-up, non-blurry pictures of your setup, it would be helpful.

Until then, one suggestion: on STAs with square posts, the bolts often have square bases, which you need to make sure are lined up correctly to pass through the STA correctly. It's an obvious point, but on one of my STAs, the bolt only fits through the square post when rotated to a particular orientation, otherwise it sticks out a bit and the slack causes the entire STA-tank assembly to wobble against the backplate.

If you have the carriage bolt with the square base which is causing the wobble, most decent hardware stores have 5/16" SS bolts in various lengths.

The lock nuts were not directly under the wing bolts. I had them under the wing, so they would not lock correctly. This is what caused a slight wiggle from side to side.

I'm not quite sure I understand your explanation, but it sounds like you may have solved the problem? If so, glad to hear it.

Sound like he had the
Lock-nut / Wing(bladder) / wing-nut
instead of
Wing(bladder) / lock-nut / wing-nut

Beats me

That makes sense. Wing nut, wing bolt, wing, yikes.

Thanks.
