I would say for 300 bucks the nitrox and a nitrox deep dive would be worth it. Figure it would be the class which how many could that be. So you would get nearly a private dive.

their prices are a little high across the board...
in St. Croix, just to give you an idea, our prices for the same are: Discover Scuba - $60 (in the ocean as a shore dive, a pool only DSD is free) Accelerated Open Water (3-5 day class) - $325 Refresher course (includes one shore dive) - $60 (if you want to do one shore dive, then a two tank boat trip, it would be $150) Open Water checkouts (as shore dives) - $225 Advanced Open Water - $200 for shore dives, or $250 if doing it off the boat Nitrox - Classroom Only cert - $150, including two shore dives - $200 EFR - $100 Rescue - $300 They must not have any shore diving and require a lot of things to be done off their boat, so that is part of the price difference, but at the same time, they are a little expensive to start...

I would wait before getting my Nitrox certification. There are two factors which cause a diver to end a dive. The first is usually running out of air. The second is nitrogen loading. Most new divers run out of air before they get loaded with nitrogen. Typical a cylinder of nitrox will cost twice the price compared to a cylinder of air. If you run out of air before you are nitrogen loaded, there is no advantage to nitrox and you are paying twice as much for your cylinder fills. When I first started diving I would run out of air. That was my limiting factor. After I had been doing more pleasure diving and got comfortable with my equipment I started lasting longer and longer. Finally at some point I hit nitrogen limits and still had air left in my cylinder. I'm now at a point were I'll have 1000+ PSI but I'm nitrogen loaded. Using nitrox now makes sense for me. I would recommend taking Peak Performance Buoyancy training (or when you do your AOW, read the chapter on PPB). This will be much more beneficial. |
