building a bp\w setup need help

Ok i found some backplate long enough for me. There a few size and weight choices to pick from These are his prices for the long plate. Warm and cold water 3mm 5mm 7mm wetsuit. singles. Maybe doubles in a few years. Also on a wing question. what size should i get i was looking at the hogs they have a 30 38 pound and a 58 pound which would you recommend. I am thinking the 38 but it says it is a doubles wing will it work on singles. Most of you know i am a big guy 6'5 470. The wing website says the 38 and 58 have the same drag and profile as the 30 due to side pockets.

A bigger wing is not always the best solution. Your wing should fit your diving. For single tank diving a 30 lbs wing will work for most. You want your wing to be able to float your rig on the surface. 58 lbs is way to much for single tank diving.

I have a 48lb wing I use for double steel with Al stage.

Just looked at the HOG wings. The 38 and 58 wing is a doubles wing. It will wrap around a single tank setup.

THats kind of what i figured and it was flatliners thoughts to. SO i should be good with the 30 pounder. What about the plate weight. Or should i try and figure what i will need for weight to sink me and my rig. I am assuming that if my rig and the weight i need is more then 30 pounds neg the 30 will not work.

It's not only how much lift a wing is rated for but the shape a design. Double wings have more space between the lift and right air pockets to accommodate the size of double tanks.

With what else you posted I would go with a steel plate. That way your have less weight on your belt. If your wearing 30 lbs on your belt your wing doesn't need to be able to lift all those 30 lbs. Your carrying weight for a few reason. One to compensate for your exposer suit. Your wetsuit will continue to be buoyant underwater so you don't need to lift all that weight. Sure it will compress some but not enough to require a wing to lift all the weight added.

Being properly weighted is important. You want enough to sink you at the surface but no more.

Where do you see your diving going. An 18 lb plate seems a bit heavy. Who makes these.

Have you checked out Deep Sea Supply. Give Tobin a call. They make good plates and wings and Tobin can explain setups 1000 times better then I can.

Well mainly warm water but i want to be able to dive cold. now i have no plans of cutting a hole in a iced over lake and dropping down in 30 degree water in a dry suit. I also do not see myself going to the point of using a drysuit. I want to go deep around 130 feet maybe deeper way down the road. I would like to go doubles in a year or so depending on how much i dive between now and then. A 3mm 5mm maybe a 7mm wetsuit. SOme wreak diving maybe cave diving. I really want to do it all atleast once. I plan on going nitrox some time between now and year from now. As for who makes them it is a guy named fred that flatliner and another member recommend i guest he is the only guy who makes them long plate besides tobin. I think the 18 is to much between that and a -11 tank i would be almost be at the 30 pounds for the 30 pound wing. Plus i would perfer not buying another plate when i go doubles because it is to heavy. I am thinking maybe the 12. I talked with tobin last year but the trip got put on hold. If i can not figure it out soon i am just going to call him and order the setup he recommend the ss plate hog harness 40 pound wing. If i can figure it out i will go with the hog wing the heavy plate and the hog harness.
