I have a DIR guy here that has gotten me set up with gear, not sure if im going to do the GUE DIR route or TDI Tech route.
Either way, GUE has a great document on gear setup, ive tried to follow that as it even goes into specifics about hose routing and such with both doubles and singles Equipment Configuration | Global Underwater Explorers That being said, i have a salvo SS bp with a halcyon wing, double al80s, a diverite 232 bar manifold, 2 oceanic cdx-5 first stages with din connectors, 2 gt3 2nd stages, primary on a 7ft hose, backup on a bungie cord around my neck, short length pressure guage, 2 computers, 1 mares and 1 oceanic, oceanic compass, turtle fins, whites drysuit, 12 pound "v" weight. salvo 10w HID light and tusa led backup. Apeks regs will be my next buy, they seem to be the popular pick for the techies around here. then some double 130s |

My rec and tec config is esentually the same. Double 104's, dive rite stainless steel backplate, dive rite rec wing, primary reg is a flathead 6, secondary is a zeagle ds4, my harness is the deluxe harness, i want to get the deluxe with a quick release or retrofit mine for a quick release. If i am going to dive a single i use just my flathead 6 everything else is the same. the GUE is a good starting point. From there you can make the tweaks that work for you. I dive with In_cavediver and if you had guessed it we are not DIR minded. We dive with what has worked for us and our instructors. As it was pointed out to me just recently if you have enough gas you can solve anything underwater.

Assuming by "tech" you are referring to back-mounted doubles, which is the most common tech configuration (although not the configuration that in_cave usually uses), you're going to want:
1) backplate, wing and hogarthian harness (some instructors are ok with a harness with quick disconnects, others are not... I don't know of any instructors who are not ok with hog harnesses, though, so that's the safer play... and less expensive). The wing should be small sized for singles use, and eventually when you're ready for doubles, you'll purchase an appropriately-sized doubles wing. For singles, you'll need a pair of cam bands, and possibly a STA (single tank adapter). 2) Good paddle fins, like Jet fins. No splits. Work on your frog kick. 3) DIN regs (or at least regs that can later be converted to DIN) with a long hose setup: 7' primary, 24-26" secondary (no cheapie octos, make it a good quality reg) on a bungee necklace, a 24-26" HP hose going to a simple 2.5" brass and glass SPG. Lose the snorkel when you go to the long hose rig. 4) Canister light. Doesn't have to be top of the like $2k+ Halcyon, could very well be a used 10w DireRive for $300, but in general, most configurations make use of a canister light with a goodman handle. 5) Probably a drysuit, although this can vary somewhat depending on location and dive plans... not needed to start with, but chances are you'll end up there. That'll get you started. Add a second 1st stage and some manifolded doubles, and you'll be ready for tech training... or at least ready for training for tech training. ![]() In general, I would purchase gear in roughly that order, as well. Combine as you like, but chances are a canister light will be tough to mount to your recreational BC, and you'll have a harder time managing a long hose without a bp/w, so the bp/w is generally the core of the system. |

Newer divers here often DO think DIR = tec or HOG. Side Mounting is tec, but not DIR nor is it HOG. I got into a flame war in this forum with a couple GUE guys(posts deleted by mods) for replying with something not DIR.
