Cave line

I recently found some stuff at home depot that looks a hell of a lot like cave line. I think it was called masonry line or twine or something like that. I believe the thickness was something like #18 or it might of been #36, can't quite remember which one looked like cave line. Is this stuff the same thing as cave line?

I think cave line is generally #24 and masonry is generally #18. However, cave line should be braided, and masonry comes either as braided or twisted.

I use masonary line for work and im not too sure if it will hold up for underwater, it can break, its pretty strong but i wouldnt chance it. Twisted masonary line is garbage i wont even use it, its not strong enough in my view for running a line on brick or block.

I use the line off a kite surfer. I know its strong and it just enough to fill my thumb spool.

Just buy an 850' spool from Reef Scuba. Under $20. Last one you'll ever need.

Unless ScubaToys carries it and I didn't see...

Most spools and reels come with high quality cave line, and you can get, as Compudude said, a buttload of cave line cheap.

I would not use masonry line underwater unless someone I trust told me they were exactly the same thing, and/or had done extensive testing to show that it could hold up. In caves, you are litereally wrapping the line around any point you can, it's definitely abrasive. You do not want to risk your life just to save a buck on your cave line, just like you wouldn't want to risk your life taking an el-cheapo light with you, or diving a mix that'll leave you narc'd at the bottom just to save on helium for really deep dives (diving trimix, with an END that'll leave you narc'd, when for $10 or $15 more you could have a mix that'll leave you thinking clearly).

Gibby, where in my original post did I say that the stuff looks allot like cave line; I'm going to use it as cave line. I DIDN'T.

what I said was, is this stuff the same as cave line. I was simply looking for information, and if the info i got back said that this is exactly the same as cave line, then I would use it as such. But the feedback did not say that; so, I'm not going to.

The reason I asked was because if it did turn out to be EXACTLY the same as cave line I would simply buy some the next time I was at Home Depot, so that I could save a few bucks and some time buying the EXACT same thing.

1) You need a question mark in there somewhere.

2) And where did I use your name in my post, or accuse you of saying it "looks allot like cave line; I'm going to use it as cave line." ?

Fact is, cave line from Dive Rite Express is 5 times the cost of masonry line......but it's still something like 5 cents a foot. Cheaper than a cubic foot of nitrox! The line from ReefScuba is less, about double the cost of masonry line from Home Depot.

The line might very well be the same, but I frickin love the "hi viz" line I can get on the internet
