Land nav compass for scuba?

Scuba compasses seem much more spendy than map compasses. Is there any reason that a liquid filled orienteering compass wouldn't work while diving?

I'm thinking that I can mount a map compass to a dive slate and save a few pesos.

For years my wife used a Suunto compass with no problems as long as we were above about 70 feet; after that it wouldn't turn.

land compasses aren't going to be built to handle the pressure changes.

And good land compasses aren't cheap either, btw. A good sighting compass will easily run as much or more than a scuba compass . . . as land nav has an expectation of greater accuracy than under-water nav.

If it is liquid filled, it should work OK. However, most land compasses do not have as good a tolerance of tilt (cant) as dive compasses. That is probably the SK-7's biggest claim to fame. My dive buddy uses a land compass from Walmart and it works just fine.

To each his own but I have enough stuff to keep up with without having to carry a slate with a compass mounted to it...but that's just me...

I have used cheap land compasses screwed onto a slate and they have worked great. As long as its liquid filled.

I would think for general work under water a liquid filled walmart one would be fine, but I don't think I would bet my life on one.

Liquid fille should work, but why on a slate? Just curious.
