Work Bench.

Has anyone built their own work bench from scratch? I'm considering building one myself and I have an idea of what I want it to look like.

If any of you have, can you post pictures or give suggestions on what functions you think should be incorporated into the design?

I know I want part of it to be enclosed and lockable. Being able to store my gear outside and locked will help save space in the house. (Make the wife happy too.) I was thinking of trying to find an old deep long sink to add it to it so I could soak/rinse my gear of there. (Instead of in the house in the tub.. makes the wife happy.)

Anything else to add?

Michael

I made a cabinet that I keep in the garage. Put it up on casters so I can move it around. I'll take some photos this weekend and post them.

I like the sink idea, right now I use a 50 gallon barrell in the driveway.

Cool, I'd like to see the pictures.

I was thinking that I could add the sink and then get an adapter to connect my water hose to the faucet. That way I wouldn't have the water on constantly. The excess water will be routed into the yard via a pvc pipe.

I know I'll be adding a vice and maybe another smaller one to help me hold whatever it is I'm working on. (Only one-arm, sucks trying to hold something and work on it. :P)

I'm still thinking of ideas. It will be awhile before I actually attempt this.

Work bench: Get two file cabinets, the two drawer size and then buy a new interior hollow core door. Place door over the file cabinets. Home depot sells the doors cheap. Under $15 and they work much beter than plywood because thaey are very ridgid and have a nice smooth work surface.

As for the rinse tank. Skip the sink. It's way to small. Buy a trash can. The kind with wheels and a hinged lid. Wheel it right to your car and dump the gear in, tank, reg, weights, wetsuit and all then the trash can serves as a cart. Take it someplace and fill it with water. I come back the next day and hang the gear up to dry and dump the water out. Actually I've installed a valve on the bottom of the trash can but a wine cork and 3/4 inch hole would do.

oh it was 1 sheet of particle board....had home depot cut it in half for me....(why not it was free and straight) and about and about 18 2x4's.

I originally had my mitre saw between them so i could cut a 10' board without a saw horse.....but have since built another contraption for that....

you will want a vice, without a doubt. having two hands and arms i still used it! great forwhen i would service regs (when was working at dive shops).

iwouldnt put a sink... just takes up space on the unit. just use any thing you have around, or go to big lots and find a big cheap plastic tub, and fill with water when you need it. otherwise, its goin to just get stagnant and dirty. also, add a 1/2 capful of bleach if you have a big tub, or less, will help clean the geasr a lil as far as any mildew etc...
