Shaker u/w signaler

Build an 18 dollar shaker for 5!

Materials:
3/4 inch pvc, round 4 inches, ever how long you want
two pipe caps, 3/4 "
Round shoelace.
pliers
sandpaper
Dremel, with drill+ small (green) burr grinder
or
drill with small bit, and burr remover
PVC Acetone Cleaner
PVC Glue (Clear looks better, IMHO)
metal BBs or shot (copperhead bbs work well)
rag
-optional-
Dive Rite Snap Bolt, Accessories-Clips & Retractors, Dive Rite, Dive Rite Snap Bolt

work:
1. Cut the PVC to the desired length. Sandpaper the end, and follow the glue and acetone's instructions to apply the cap to one end. clean up excess glue with the rag.

2. use the drill bit to drill through the other cap, expanding the hole a bit with the burr remover. ---WARNING--- Do this in a ventilated area, pvc, when hot, creates cyanide!---

3. run the shoelace through the hole, then loop it back, pulling with the pliers if needed. If you use the clip, be sure to loop it into the lace now.

4. Once you have a good loop, cut off most, but not all your slack.

5.pull the loop back a bit, exposing more slack, and double knot it. pull the loop out and be sure your satisfied.

6.fill the pipe about half-way with bbs, closing it up to test the sound. I f you like, then proceed. otherwise, adjust the amount of bbs

7.Prep and Glue the last cap on. wipe the excess off, and let cure.

There you go! any questions?

Thumbs down Cha Cha Cha

Ok, so you go to Home Depot or Lowes to pick-up the PVC, glue. Then you go to Target or Walmart to pick-up the BBs. So now you have 30 to 40 minutes in a project that hasn't even began. So you spent 2-3 dollars at Walmart and another 5-6 at the home store. Plus gas, we get home to assemble the shaker. Afer stealing a shoe lace and getting out/putting away the tools, we have another 15-20 minutes in assembly. We now have a shaker that looks cheesy and resembles a minature pipe bomb. Dude, for $10 plus gas, and an hour of my time, I would rather spend $18 for a professionally manufactured product with warranty and no hassel. Pick one up then next time you happen to be at the dive shop. Maybe 2 extra minutes out of your life. Cha Cha Cha!

or if you've ever done any plumbing or irrigation work in your life, you probably have all the stuff just laying around.. (I do) Though I haven't made one yet, I can tell you it takes about 30 seconds to assemble one, not 15-20...

this is the DIY section, there is definitely room for movement on the plans - instead of BB's, use a couple nuts/bolts, or a couple sockets (I recommend 11mm or 13mm due to the fact that 10 and 12 are the most commonly used, and 11 and 13 are always what I end up finding)

You may like spending money on things, but I'd rather do it for next to nothing...

Good idea with the nuts. A big bigger and heavier, thus a bit louder. You can also use an old 35mm film canister (remember them?). Only one end to worry about and can be sealed with a little silicon. Film processing places still give these away.

Thanks for the idea with the canister, I have some lying around and can experiment with the sound. Do you think PVC cement would work on the lighter plastic canister?

I do have one note however - I would find a way to attach it without drilling a hole in it... although it would make it a little positively buoyant, keeping air inside of it instead of water would make for louder noise and easier for the stuff inside to move...

I know a plumber who dives. He makes shakers using 3" of copper piping, puts a couple of nuts in there & caps the ends. He was kind enough to just give me one so I didn't get the whole DIY experience

A lot of my DIY efforts are not always cheaper than a store bought item. I do it for the satisfaction of making mine the way I want it, maybe stronger, faster, lighter, etc. I know guys who make their own regulators and dive them. Most folks think they are crazy. I think it is neat. It is the satisfaction you get in making it that matters. And if it looks like a pipe bomb, so much the better! Kinda like an old weight belt I had that had weight shaped like hand grenades. Boy, would the TSA like that...
