Tom,

as you asked I have made a couple, I use them to keep decompression profiles on for deep dives, they are as others have said the one sided type. as it was scrap pipe and about 50 cents worth of bungie, I think it was worth it.
I dont write on mine, I just print off the table and stick it to the slate with Opsite, its a clear waterporof wound dressing, work was throwing out a bunch that were out of date so that didn't cost me either.

Great idea!

Would you be able to tell me how its been holding up? Any problems with the underwater useage?

Someone had a really nice on my last trip to the keys. It looked like black magic marker was used. I could read it from a distance, meant to ask what it was, but didn't.

Not to start a heated debate, but which is the best underwater writing type device?

White opaque signboard works great. It is the acrylic signs that you see backlite on outdoor advertising. Stop at a local company and ask for larger broken pieces. They will probably give them to you for free. 1/8 inch thickness works well.

Cut with any saw to any shape, heat (with a heat gun) if you want to bend it, sand the surface and you can write on it underwater with a pencil. Attach pencil to slate with surgical tubing. Clean with softscrub or sand to renew. Laminate any info (no deco stop limits...) with polyurethane.

I made a bunch for Christmas one year and gave them to all my diving friends.

I personally like good ole PVC pipe cut and melted in the oven. I have around 20-25 slates and simple re-paint them with krylon after using them. I think I have $5 or $6 dollars in it.

Is there something wrong with OMS or do some people just not care for their gear?
