Seal Pricing

I got a dry suit from a neiboring fire department the other night and the seals need replaced in it. The suit itself is in great shape old but great shape. No one has used it in quite some time. I priced a shop in my area to replace the seals for me and they gave me a price of $55 for a neck seal and $75 for the wrist seals. Also since it has been sitting for a few years should I also think about replacing the valves while I'm at it. Any information would be greatly apprciated. By the way the suit it a older USIA Dry suit.

Are you looking for seals to do the work yourself, or are you looking for other places to do the work? OS Systems is the go-to place for DIY repair. Make sure you know what you're doing, or pick up a copy of the Airspeed Press drysuit maintenance book.

Local repairs are great when they're an option, but the most common places to send the suit out for repairs, other than manufacturers, are Gamble Scuba in Florida, and Superior Diving Repair (in Minnesota or Michigan, I think... one of those Norther M states). Give them a call and see how their rates compare.

If the shop is quoting these prices to replace the seals including parts and labor, that's cheap, go for it. I've replaced my own wrist seals. Theres a learning curve. LOL. Do take CompuDudes advice and get the appropriate Airspeed press book on it if you want to try it yourself. I really like their stuff. Worth every penny!!!

These are prices for them to have them replaced for me and the guy does them all the time so I don't think I have to worry about learning curve. I thought those seemed like really good prices he said he was doing it at his cost no markup.

A pair of latex wrist seals is only $33 at OSSystems. A neck seal is also only $33. Add $5 worth of glue, and you have cost.

If he's replacing them for you, that's a good deal, because he's not charging a lot for the work. That's NOT "cost", however, unless he's getting reamed on the parts and passing that reaming onto you.

If he's charging you $55+75=$130 for ~$70 worth of parts, and you have to do the work yourself, then no, it's not a good deal.

I sent my suit off to Superior Diving Repair in Minnesota last week. I believe that they quoted me at 55 for neck and 40 for each wrist. I will have to look when i get to work tomorrow to see the exact prices. Plus I have to pay for shipping to and back. I don't think your shops prices are out of line. I tried to replace the seals on my old suit and that did NOT have a good outcome. Not that i cared much, which is why i tried it. it wasn't worth 150 for the seals replaced when i bought the suit for 200 with undergarments. So i would suggest haveing them do it and not trying yourself.

Tim, as to the first, I believe the military figures approx $2mil per soldier, at that level, perhaps a bit more (I'm working off of memory, which is known to be faulty).

The second, however, is priceless.

I'm dropping the suit off tonight to get done I think. If I have time. I quess I should say at cost the shop I'm dropping it off at is sending it out somewhere else to get done, he will only be charging me his cost to have it done he won't charge me any extra for his shipping and service for basically contracting the work for me somewhere else so I guess it seems like a good deal. At least this way I don't have to worry about any learning curve and me messing it up.

I just got my suit back a week and a half ago from Superior Drysuit Repair. Final cost was $217 for both wrist seals, neck seal, pressure test, and 2 seam leak repairs. All that is left for me to do is trim the seals and dive.
