I do have one other question - my wetsuit really bothers me when I am on land, but I never notice it when I am diving. Is a drysuit like that also? My fear has been trying to do an hour long dive while feeling like I am choking but it occurred to me that the feeling might only affect me when on land and since that's a short period, I might be able to tolerate it so I can stay warm while doing some long dives ![]() |

Generally you only zip your drysuit up (and put the neck seal over your head) just before you get ready to plunge in. This is certainly the case here in SoCal, where it's often hot topside, so you want to wait as long as possible before sealing yourself in an airtight bag, so you don't end up dripping with sweat from the warm undies and sunlight. Standard topside mode, as Navy pointed out, is with the drysuit unzipped to hang at the waist, suit arms tucked into the suspenders to keep the seals safe and off the ground. |

If you size the seal correctly I dont feel much around my neck either topside or underwater. There is alot less material around your neck than a wetsuit I dont like turtle necks either and i dont like when i have to button the top button on my shirts and wear a tie, but i have no problems with a drysuit. My advise is to either try one on or go to a DUI dog days or something like that, i think the other manufactorers have similar programs, where they fit you with a suit and let you dive it to see how you like it. That will be the only way to tell if you like it or not i think.

When I first dove a drysuit I really noticed the neck seal and felt a little "choked" by it on land, once in the water the feeling instantly disappeared. I don't really have any "neck" issues, so to speak, but was still bothered by it on land. I don't even notice on land much anymore and really feel the hood on my neck much more than the drysuits neck seal.
A properly fitting neck seal will make a big difference. Trouble you'll likely run into here is it will stretch out a bit over time so when you first get it you'll need to have the seal a little tighter than it'll relax to after a few dozen dives. For most people i've spoken with the tradeoff has been worth it for them, but we dive in colder midwestern waters. The water temps you'll be diving in and your personal tolerance to cold will likely help you to make a decision. |
