I have been using Oceanic gauges for over 20 years. When they came out with dive computers they had an upgrade program. The first dive computers did not have user changeable batteries. I upgraded again a couple of years ago to a computer with user changeable batteries through the program. They have excellent products, warrantees, and programs IMO.
There are bound to be dissatisfied customers and it may not be Oceanic's, but the retail stores doing. You will hear a lot from a dissatisfied consumer and from others that have heard about the negative experience. I have had 3 Oceanic Dive computers. Other than the first not having user changeable batteries. I do not think I have had any problems. |

I have a veo 100, you can buy it from scubatoys for about 135.00 in a wrist boot (with 10% forum discount), shipped for free, no tax (outside tx).
It's great, I've dove it for about 2 years now - 50 or so dives. Is it air integrated, no, does it have an audio alarm, no, back light no. Does it keep me from doing decomp diving - yes, if I'm smart enough to look at it through my dives (I am). Does it have a log book function with depth, time, surface interval, nitrogen level, temp, date, time, etc - yes. It's a great little device, and Oceanic gives a 2 year warranty on it. I'm sure that there's someone out there who had their trip ruined due to a flooded computer. Which, I suspect would be replaced by oceanic quite easily on the return of their trip. The things are man-made and therefore fallible. However, as long as you take good care of it - are careful during battery change outs - replace or clean the o-ring as necessary...I can't imagine what there is to complain about. At least for a recreational diver. Now if you want all those bells and whistles my little veo 100 doesn't have - no problem, it just costs more...they have bell and whistle models, ai, backlight, chirping alarm... I think most shops talk down the stuff they don't carry. My favorite shop in town(other than ST) carries equipment from several manuf: auqualung, seaquest, scubapro, oceanic, aeris. I like them because if I ask about the quality or difference between oceanic and scubapro, I got what I feel is an honest valuation, they have nothing to lose to sell me one vs. the other. In fact, when they sell packages they usually sell 2 types - high end (all bells and whistles) and another package that in their words "is more value oriented, using manufacturers that are less expensive, but are still high-quality)...guess who the latter is - oceanic. at any rate - mileage will vary...the only oceanic equip I own is my computer - but I like it. I have had 2 Aeris computers go south on me over the past 10 years. Also had a Scubapro and an Uwatec get sketchy on me. **** happens.
But the nice thing is, I bought them from authorized dealers, so I was given new computers. One of which was an upgrade as Aeris/Ocianic no longer made it.

Oceanic computers are made by Pelagic, Inc. They make computers for half the dive manufacturers. There is nothing wrong with them. I've got two Pelagic made computers and have never had a single bit of problems with them, with hundreds of dives on them. One is close to 10 years old I think. whoever told you that was just badmouthing a product they either competed with to sell or didn't like, or repeating the garbage from someone else who had to compete with it. |
