I am reading a lot on these forums about local DOPS asking for log books. I haven't kept a log book for years. I did most of my diving in Africa and Asia and never had any issues. Since I have been back the states I have dove in Coz and Playa. I stopped keeping a log because I would always forget it and end up with a log book with the dives from that vacation.

I am a cert Divemaster but I don't carry the card because I won't pay the annual fee and there is also the liability issue so I carry my rescue card. I have been diving for about 20 years so I really lost interest in the log book. I would like to dive the keys though. Am I going to run into some anal LDS with some 20 year old DM is going to give me some ****?

Is there a problem with taking the specialty courses but not purchasing the card?

The reason I ask is because one of the local LDS is holding a FREE seminar called Equipment Specialist. It says you can purchase the card at the end but it doesn't say that you HAVE to. I'd like to attend (to learn about equipment) but I don't really care to have the c-card for the specialty.

My goal is to learn more about the equipment diving in general, not so much to have a bunch of certs, so is there any reason why I need to purchase the card?

Here's the exact wording:
This is a free seminar for anybody who has bought gear at Divers supply. Those who have not bought gear may also attend. We will go over gear maintenance and function. PADI divers may purchase the PADI "Equipment specialist" rating at the end of the night. "Equipment specialist" counts towards PADI Master Diver rating.

So nobody gets upset, I bought all of my equipment from this shop (except a few wetsuits and misc items) and am taking my AOW through them so it's not like I'm using them for their seminar.
