All,

I just read of an accident on the Oriskany today at around noon involving a rebreather diver. It has been confirmed that there was an incident death likely but not confirmed. This has been a very bad month for diving. Lets remember not to get complacent in diving as the end of the season draws near. My sincerest condolences to all involved.

Looking at some of the accidents and mishaps in the forum I found myself watching videos on YouTube and one piqued my interest… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tp22x74SyEc it reminded me of a dive I had a few months ago… was diving in a cave in Fla and while me and the other three divers were taking in the sights, my BC auto inflator filled my BC and slammed me into the ceiling of the cave… I dumped the valve and settled down on the large rock we were on… within 3 min I hit the ceiling again… but this time my light (on my wrist) hit the ceiling as well and so, I was not in a very good situation… no light, malfunctioning BC, and since my light was the brightest it plunged us all into almost complete darkness… after our eyes adjusted, I unplugged my auto inflator and dumped the valve again… found my buddy and we used his light and made it out of the cave and to the surface. Once the dive master came up with the other diver, he was amazed that even with the equipment failure no one panicked we improvised and everything went well… after replacing my inflator I got in two more dives.
Giving Blood - AKA The Stupid Thing That I Did

This Rocket Surgeon did something really stupid Saturday night.

I did my normal 3 tank trip on Saturday (Halloween).

After putting the boat away, I rushed home to get a shower and rinse my gear. You see, I had to be out of the house before sunset. I did not have any candy for the neighborhood creatures.

I made it out of the neighborhood with time to spare. I figured that I would grab some dinner and maybe a movie.

While checking movie times I noticed that they were doing a blood drive in the theater parking lot. I figured, hey why not, that will kill some time. Oh yea, the platelet donation that will kill 30 minutes right there. As I sat there, having my life blood drained from me, the thought struck me “THIS IS STUPID”. I am loaded with nitrogen, and here I am removing red blood cells. This can not be good for “off gassing”.

Sunday: I am fried. I get up, shuffle through breakfast, look at the lawn and decide that it can go another week before being cut. I spent the whole day on the sofa. Now, this could have all been in my head. But, I was draggin’ a$$. I did find the ambition to go online to DAN.org and see what their take on donating blood and diving would be. The short answer is, don’t do it.

*Diving Medicine FAQs
Diving After Donating Blood*
*Q:*
If I donate a pint of blood how soon afterward is it safe to dive?

*A:*
Immediately following blood donation, the volume of circulating blood is reduced. Provided the donor eats and drinks normally, blood volume returns to normal within 24 hours. Diving within the first few hours after donating blood is not advisable because of the possibility that reduced blood flow could cause impaired inert gas washout after a dive, and thus an increased risk of decompression sickness. We have no reason to believe that it is necessary to wait more than 24 hours after donation before scuba diving.

Dive buddy just posted this on our local site.

Image: http://forum.scubatoys.com/images/icons/icon13.gif *Injured..Weird?*
Did 2 deep dives last Sat.24th too 130ft and it appears I have ruptured my left eardrum. Don't know how? Equalized fine ascending and descending. Felt a little like I had water in my ear on the boat after but thought it would clear. Over the past 4 days loss of hearing and increase in ringing to the point of calling DAN and going to ER. NO PAIN but a small tare. On antibiotics and no getting it wet until healed. Then follow up exam. Hearing loss may or may not be permanent. Hospital to claim DAN but may have to do it myself if bill comes to me. Hope I am well enough to do the Last Echo dive! Otherwise its up to you all to win the house boat!Image: http://forum.scubatoys.com/images/smilies/other/th_ok.gif

You have to understand that this town is an affluent suburb where everyone knows everyone, people walk to the train to go into work-they still have parades down Main St & have town festivals and the like-we never locked our cars while growing up & can still remember if you got into trouble(my brothers), the police just brought you home & gave you a lecture, no arrests. Really sad commentary on life these days that this type of crime has touched what i always considered a safe haven:smiley19:
