Importance of fitness in diving

Fitness is extremely important for safe diving. Depending on the conditions your body could be put under physical stress. Like swimming on the surface back to the dive boat in choppy seas. Or having to swim with your dive body on the surface back to the dive boat because said buddy developed a leg cramp.

I completely agree, there is nothing better then to do an activity well and not have to worry about huffing and puffing your way up the beach after a dive.

Fitness is also extremely helpful in reducing air consumption during a particularly strenuous dive.

No doubt about it. I know when I first started diving again that I recognized immediately that I needed to get in better shape. I started watching my diet and exercising on a much more regular basis. I've dropped 24 lbs and feel a heck of a lot better in the water now.

We dived our regular dive spot yesterday (first time since the typhoon). We had a little bit of a current off-shore that pushed us out of position and we ended up with a long surface swim back (against the current). If it weren't for conditioning that situation could have went from something that was only a pain in the butt to a dangerous one very quickly.

I could not agree more. Yesterday I went diving and tu current was quite strong. People that were in bad shape had to call off the dive.
