Running is great exercise, I lost the most weight running but it is murder on the joints. Swimming is probably the best exercise that you can do, it eleviates the joint pressure and allows you to stretch all muscle groups with out over extending them. If you pull a muscle while swimming you are doing something wrong.

I'll second the vote for cycling! I was a runner for many years, but it's an unforgiving sport and with age comes more aches and pains from road running. Road cycling is a whole 'nother thing. Granted there's cost that doesn't exist with running...and not every area is conducive to cycling. But I'm fortunate to live in an area that is, and I'm very glad to have taken it up. It's a great cardio-fitness sport, and nothing beats being outdoors!

both can be great, for me I can't mentally handle the stationary bike so I ride the mtn bike or road bike. For me jogging is a really poor cardioworkout as the longest I can go is about 40minutes to an hour. On my road bike, I can maintain a HR of 180bpm for 3-5 hours. Although I have found that running is a better workout to drop wieght, as for the cardio part, cycling is much better.

one of my friends is a major success story.
He was at around 400lbs and bordering diabetic issues. He went to Europe for work for 2weeks and was basically ashamed he couldn't sit in normal chairs/taxi's/etc. Studied like mad for about a month on diet and nutrition and put it into action. He went out and bought a stationary bike, a console gaming thingie (like x-box, ps2, etc.) and a small television for it. Sat on his bike playing video games for 40 - 60mins a night, and normally spent more like 70minutes. Completely changed his entire diet (No more fast-food, no more buffet, diet pills, healthy salads/etc.) for over a year. He lost about 200 - 250lbs, and is now a very slim 6'3" and has a waist of like 28 - 30. He's slowly incorporated fast-food into his diet, but mainly his concern is he is a true food addict. Him and his girlfriend went to Vegas and he got out of control, ate 14 desserts and then had two or three plates of food. After he finished he of course got sick for several hours and felt again horrible, but he's held his diet for a few years now. |

When I first started getting back into shape I started biking because I was too fat and me knees and hips hurt too run. After about a month of biking and hitting the gym, I got 10-15 lbs off and could run again. So maybe just shed a few lbs and running again won't be so bad for you
