grey hairs unite (at the end of the anchor line)!
Great thread. Got my OW at 56, Nitrox at 57, AOW at 58 and just did two wreck dives on the Hebe off Myrtle Beach in 115' (with 115' viz
). Going to try and find some sharkies before I go home. Not many sharks in WV.My main issue right now is a funky ankle which which makes walking/jogging a no-no. In the water it's fine though. When I was growing up I figured 58 was wheelchair city ... guess not. |

Older Achiever
A friend of mine had an elderly grandfather who completed OW at the age of 84, I believe. I don't think that he really had much interest in diving, other than to say that he had done it. But, I am still very impressed.

One of the things that always attracted me to diving is that it is a sport you can do for your whole life. Try and picture playing rugby at 80. That said if my great grandfather learned to ski in his 60s to spend time with my father I hope to at least be able to dive into my 70's.

Being an older diver myself I was a little worried when I read this article about Donald Sutherland's close call with diving.

Getting my OW after my 50th which is in a few weeks, just thinking about diving has helped me start working out again, loosing weight, eating better etc. my plan is do what I want till I am gone, usually around 85+ for my family. Going for a record for sure.
I did however give up the motorcycle racing (for now)... bones don't heal as fast anymore and usually require surgery, I am tired of that for sure.

I have a friend of mine, 71 years young, still actively diving and teaching. I have several others in their mid-late 60s who still dive and teach. I have read reports of divers in their 80s enjoying their Carribbean trips.
Have a great time!
