Value-added service. Don't like it?...don't use it.

WayToSlow...thanks for the sites

I still fail to see why we would need to show how (in a profile or other) how many thanks someone has given. It provides no added value and is nothing more than a contest....

it might seem value added but anyone can click thanks on any post just to run their "thanks" count up. same thing happened on SB.

Scubaboard - I spend a lot of time there, different atmosphere but a lot of good detailed info there. Remember the thread we had here about a year ago? No bashing of other sites as that knife cuts both ways.

Thanks - there are pros and cons. On the one hand, it may help to cut down on clutter, giving a way for someone to say "thanks" or also "I agree" without adding short meaningless posts. It keeps the recognition in one tidy place where it should be - associated with the specific post.

On the other hand, I detest "popularity" contests and I've noticed how a popular member will often get a ton of thanks for decent posts while less popular members get none for extremely helpful posts. Keeping count just adds to it. Maybe I'm just sour because it seems so prevalent on boards these days. It's that whole myspace Friends crap that every forum seems to be adopting. When someone asks to be my "friend" or "buddy" on a board, first thing I do is look to see how many they have. If they have like 300 "friends" then I assume they are more interested in trying to run up their count than to be my "friend".

Yeah... when they started that "friends thing" I got friends request from people I had never heard of before... It was clear that they had were just trying to run up their "friend count".

I would assume this is attractive to boards that are running at full performance capacity and want to reduce the amount of posts with just the word "thanks" in it....
You would assume correctly! I just thought it was a nice idea because it kept the thread smaller. It also might be a good idea for a competition . We'll have to wait and see, though.
