I read the thread, and I may be showing my ignorance, but what is the value in freediving down to 80+ feet? Pride? Ego? It seems too dangerous a risk for the reward. I don't get it...

The value for that particular group would be the ability to get the fish that live at those deeper depths...

It can be very dangerous especially for younger less experienced freedivers. Did you read the Freediving Deaths thread about the experienced, but young man at 17 years old freediving 75 feet for a fish without a buddy then a possible SWB? Very sad.

I've only been to 30 feet, and that was the maximum of my comfort level. Heck, I was pretty proud of that. There is no way I am going any deeper, without taking a free-diving class.

There is a ton of pride in going down in your preys environment and coming up with dinner on one breath. You are putting the fish to an advantage instead of disadvantage.

I like free diving for watches at the like at local lakes and rivers. Most times I just go down to 20 ft and cruise around that for a minute or two, but I've been down to around 50 ft or so. Personally, as much as I like SCUBA diving, (and I do love it!), I'll always enjoy the freedom you have when you free dive.

The world record is over 100m deep so 80 feet seems like nothing in that regard although it is deeper than I will ever go.
