Difference between NAUI, PADI and SSI

Three instructors and their students are on board a dive boat
in the middle of the ocean. There is a NAUI instructor, a PADI
instructor, and an SSI instructor. Everything is going fine until
the boat springs a leak and starts to sink. The SSI instructor
says to his students, "Okay, we're in the middle of the ocean,
so we might as well do our deep dive." The NAUI instructor
says to his students, "Okay, we might as well do our
navigation dive, so let's get our compasses out and swim
towards shore." The PADI instructor says to his
students, "Okay, for $25 extra you guys get to do a wreck
dive!"

I've heard of this joke before but a slightly different variant:


Four diving instructors and their classes were on a boat that struck a rock and began sinking.

The SSI instructor told his class: "Inflate your BCs and surface marker buoys, jump off and wait for the Coast Guard."

The YMCA instructor told his class: "You all had to swim 20 miles to qualify, the distance to the shore should be no problem, now jump in and swim!"

The NAUI instructor told his class: "We are the first and the best and the greatest! Everyone grab a woman in one arm and a child in the other and swim them to shore!"

The PADI instructor said: "Gear up and have a seat. There will be a extra charge of $50 each for this unscheduled wreck dive."

I went PADI for OW, Advanced, and Nitrox. After that, I jumped ship to NAUI. Never going back.

For the unititiated here, what is the difference between the dive associations? I realise PADI is the more expensive one, but what culture/attitude to the others promote?
