Finally got to play with the G10 in Fiji and now know that there's now way to use it without a strobe... the part of the housing that protrudes so you can extend the lens really blocks light from getting to the bottom half of the shots. Still, at least I started getting more familiar with the little intricacies of that camera and have another 6 weeks before I go to Lembeh.

Just heard from Keri at Reefnet and it looks like my 10x subsee magnifier should be shipping out towards the end of next week!

While the pics from Fiji aren't up to my usual standards, thought I would post a few just the same...

you can see how the light gets blocked from the bottom of the pics
Looks good! I thought you were getting a strobe for the G10?

I would be really interested in what you think about the magnifier. Please post or PM me.......

G10

Ok I googled G10 - is this what you are referring too?

Canon WP DC28 Marine case for digital photo camera

Just curious - above water cameras I know a lot about - the underwater realm I am still a little fish in a big pond...

Yes, she just picked up the Canon G10 with the Canon housing. If you notice the lens port on the housing you can see what she means buy the onboard flash being particialy blocked causing a dark area in the lower portion of the photo. The G10 is one of my favorite advanced compact cameras though, just like all cameras you have to figure out how to get the best results with it.

When you get the DX-2G this can happen with the wide angle lens attached as well. Be sure on close ups and macro shots to take this into consideration...

Will Do

Figure with the DX-2G I'll dial down the power of the on-board flash and more so depend on the 2 strobes I'm getting. From what I gathered from the Sea & Sea documentation is that I can pretty much dial the on-board flash down to no power so it is like it never fired.

Something I am waiting on a rep to confirm for me as I want to make sure I avoid the unwanted shadows on my new subjects.

Thanks for the heads up on it.

The housing has a built in diffuser that can be lowered to mask the on board flash. This should take care of most issues as far as shadows and backscatter when used with the strobes. You need the on board flash to fire to trigger the strobes to light your subject.

The chosen position of the strobes being your main light source will have huge effects on shadows and contrast. With macro work where the strobes could be positioned closer to the housing is where you could have issues with a port or wet lens creating shadows in the photo.

When you get your camera let me know and we can meet at ST and get some practice shots in the pool where you can get a feel for the kit and we can deal with any questions/issues before taking out to the lake.

With the DX 2G out for almost a year and (hopefully) Sea & Sea releasing the next G series camera spring/summer 2010 the price on the DX 1G has dropped and is much more affordable to people looking to get into U/W photography. Still one of the best advanced compact camera options on the market after 2 years......

Very impressive. I'll have to look into Sea & Sea when it comes upgrade time.
