Arrow SEA&SEA DX-1G camera

Has anyone had a chance to try one of these out yet? If so any opinions or thoughts? Thanks...

The SEA&SEA DX-1G camera offers SLR functionality, performance and features without the bulk, hassle and weight of an SLR system.

It has basically all the same functions as the DX8000 that Sea&Sea discontinued when it introduced this one. Differences that I could find right away are that the DX-1G can do macro within 1/2 inch instead of 3/4 inch, and has 10.0 megapixels instead of 8.0 megapixels.

We have the DX8000 and really love it. It takes great macro and wide angle shots and the picture quality is excellent. My husband doesn't want to go the DSLR route because of the bulk and expense, so this little compact gets us just about as close as we can get IMO. On our liveaboard trip this summer, we had a bunch of big time photographers during the first week. They were shocked and impressed with the shots that were coming out of our little compact digital as compared to their huge rigs.

I think that 80% of it is the photographer's skill and 20% is the capabilities of the camera to do what the photographer wants.

I looked around a little about this a week ago. It appears to be a rebadged Ricoh GX100 with a Sea & Sea housing. The camera itself seems to be getting pretty good reviews. The camera alone sells for about $600, so that means with a complete pricetag of $1,000 they're putting a $400 value on the housing. This would still be comparable to a Canon G9 and an Ikelite housing. It would be a toss-up for me.

There was a camera shop on Scubaboard that was supposed to take it out and get some pictures in this thread, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm curious to see how it performs compared to the G9.

Thanks for the info......... If you find anything else please post!! If I can get my hands on one this weekend I will try to take some test shots.

Some of the guys at ST said they were working with one when they fist got it and the macro was impressive.

Maybe you should try and talk the ST guys into taking some pool shots...maybe take a nice flower arrangement down and do some macros, hehe.

A friend had mentioned the blazing fast speed between shots with minimal lag on the DX1G. He is limited only by his strobe.

Does it support TTL connection? Or does it require an optic fired strobe?

DpReview was not too impressed with this camera. You can read the conclusion and in-depth review HERE.

For an UW camera it has some real nice features like the 24mm lens, and a hot shoe. It also has some big downsides like 5.5 seconds to write a RAW image, poor high ISO performance, and a slow lens (f4.4 at 75mm???), and slow macro focusing.

Is this a DSLR replacement? Hardly, more like a marking slogan.

Comparing a PnS camera with a DSLR is kinda like comparing a Peterbilt 18 wheeler truck to a Chevy 3500. They are very different animals.

If you want DSLR performance, than get a DSLR. This comes with all the advantages (speed, large sensor, good high ISO performance, outrageous focus systems, Unbelievable flash systems, and support, etc.) and the disadvantage of cost, size, cost, and size!

Some PnS's do very well, especially if one is not enlarging beyond 11x14, but you get all the disadvantages (slow, poor high ISO performance, small sensor, fixed lenses, poor lens performance and distortion, no dedicated flash support in SOME) and the advantage of cost, size, cost, and size!

When this first came out, I was curious. Maybe this would fill a gap where I don't feel like taking down my DSLR as my S70 has not so good shutter lag, and is about 100 years old in Digital Years (like Doggie years, but worst!).

I'll stick with my S70 for now as the RAW support on this camera looks bad, and I can't wait 5.5 seconds between shots. It's also VERY expensive for what it is! You can get a low end DSLR with lens for about the same cost, and ANY DSLR will out perform this camera in a ton of ways.

It has a hot shoe, but don't confuse FLASH TTL, with TTL metering, or strobe support.

This camera does NOT support any Flash TTL metering that I can tell, but it does NOT require an optical sensor either. As it does have a built in flash, one could use an optical sensor I assume if that is desirable.
