When is the best time of year to take AOW with scuba toys?
Lake Travis is pretty cool 60' down. Is it warmer later in the summer?
Does visibility get worse later in the summer?

We did ours in July it was hot so that water at 60- 100 ft feels good. The viz in Travis is always bad. It's a lake. We stayed in a hotel down the road, others camped.
But the group and the guys from ST made it for a great weekeqnd. If I had to do it again I would pick June before it gets too hot and camp. You'll have fun no matter when ya go.

Truth in Advertising: I am backup instructor for that class.

In general, when lake diving in North America it take a while for the lakes to warm up. When surface temperatures are getting nice there is a delay to the water temperatures increasing. However, as things get warmer the visibility decreases. Additionally, the most popular time to go to a dive training location means other classes will be there stirring up the slit. So visibility always goes down due to student activity.
If you are planning on diving locally, go right away. You'll probably be diving in May next year. Might as well get used to the cold now.![]()

Thanks for the replies and advice. I signed up for the class today.
Regarding getting used to the cold. ... That was what I was trying to avoid for a while. Taking the class with me is my daughter. I want her to enjoy diving before freezing her!
Her first couple of dives were on a discover scuba program in Cozumel. That was a good experience which got her wanting to get lessons.
I did my AOW at Travis, it's a lake, always dark and cold then I've been to COZ thats why I don't like lake diving anymore. LOL
It's a fun weekend if nothing else you will have spent some time together. Have a fun weekend.

On a good note, most new divers are not as comfortable in the water as they will someday become. You will tend to use your arms and hands. You will kick more than you really need to. All this activity will keep you warm.
Case in point, I used to dive 75F water in a bathing suit. Now, I move against the water so little I get cold with a full 3mm in 82F water.
In other words, it won't seem that cold when you first start diving.

I took mine at CSSP in aug and the water at depth was cold. Enjoyed the class even in the murk and cold. Made me really appreciate COZ and the Red SEA. Told my grandson if he got certified at CSSP then he could dive anywhere and enjoy it.
The mention of wet suit made me reminded me I have to rent one for the class. Lake Travis is about 62F at 60ft. What thickness of the wet suit should I rent?
82f seems warm to me, but my daughter will complain if she has to be in that temp to long. I rented a tank Teusday night to make sure the rest of our equipment worked. She complain after 15 minutes in the pool at 83.
I was glad we did this before the class. She hadn't used scuba equipment since see was certified last fall. It was good refresher.
62 at 60 feet is warm! LOL
It's around 50 degrees at 60 feet in Missouri. :-D
