Starting Advanced NAUI class today

I wish I had known there is no 'open water' component to the advanced NAUI class...I was waiting for 'warmer' weather to do it, as I expected to have another 'open water' test with it. It turns out, you are responsible for this yourself.

Modules Include:
- Night Diving
- Dry-Suit Diving
- Underwater Photography
- Wreck Diving
- Boat Diving
- Search & Recovery

Anything else I need to be aware of? Is there a some kind of written test at the end? I'll be going over my beginners book today to refresh some concepts....

When I did my initial certification there was a clasroom & pool part (about 4-5 weeks) and after that we had (I guess mandatory) 4 open water dives.

I thought the advanced course has the same structure - but as they told me on the phone, there is no open water component. Or maybe I misunderstood?

you may have misunderstood-

my AOW is PADI, but we were responsible for reading the material, reveiwing it with the instructor, then completing the dives with the instructor

You definitely misunderstood. I just did a NAUI AOW class this past weekend and we had to complete a minimum of 6 OW dives for the certification. Maybe they said that class tonight wouldn't involve any water? And yes you will have a test to do so read your manual.

Hm. I think they sell classes separately from the 6 open water dives. I'm 100% sure I asked if there are any dives necessary after the class ans she said "No, those are your responsibility". So I assume I can go find any NAUI instructor who will complete the dives with me.

too bad...its just a poor business practice. They advertise the course as $129, but then add on a manual separately, then a new card separately, and soon enough it is somewhere around $230. Now with 6 open water dives.....just poor customer service.....

There are no POOL dives required, but for NAUI there ARE 6 OPEN WATER dives required - 3 mandatory components, and 3 "electives".

Interesting. Apparently they have pool practices after every class. I guess I'll know better tonight...

Contact NAUI Worldwide and ask if this is considered a standard practice for that shop. It doesn't make sense to me for them to do it the way you describe, and I'm unaware of any shop that does it that way--this would be a first.

I strongly suspect that there's a miscommunication here.

NAUI Worldwide Dive Safety Through Education is the url.

My NAUI AOW dives included: night, deep, navigation, scooter, search & recovery, wreck, and one rescue, Platy was my TA and I had to rescue his sorry snorkeling arse. FYI...Platy is a BIG guy and I'm 150 soaking wet. NAUI always requires one rescue (Platy, please correct me here, if I'm wrong). There was very little classroom and no pool time. The dives and book were included in my tuition ($200 at ST)
