I check my valve after I put on my harness just to make sure I can reach it. It's part of my routine.

I sure can!

Once, I rolled the valve off while under a ledge. Luckily, I recognized the symptoms and reached back and opened it up.

I tried this before our dives this last weekend and was pleased to know that I could ... seems like it should be something that should be shown during OW class.

Absolutely.

I also don't dive a rig that puts the valve in the middle of my back, out of reach.

Yep, I just returned a Mares Pegasus back to ST because when I strapped it on a tank, I could not reach my valve, no matter how I tried to adjust it. I ended up exchanging for a Zeagle Escape.

Yep. Its amazing how many divers have the top of the tank half way down their back.Must make it impossible to reach the valve.

Could I make a suggestion to anybody that has not considered this? On your next dive see if you can reach the valve and check it is fully open. if you can't reach it adjust the tank height until you can. It may also help to rotate the tank a little so the valve moves closer to your shoulder.

Its a little thing but it might just save your life one day.

Yes always started diving in the days that part of the ck out was they shut your air off and you had to reach back and turn it on yourself, think J valve.
