emergency accent

random question and there prob isnt a clear cut answer but you never know lol.when you do an emergency accent, your supposed to breath out all the way up, how do you not run out of air before you reach the surface if your breathing it all out?.i know the other option is not an option but just wondered if there is a technique to it ?.

the whole idea is to open the airway and relieve pressure in the lungs as the air expands the amount you exhale isnt a big issue you can still have air in the lungs you arent TRYING to empty them just opening up the throat and letting out a little air. keep the airway open and let Charles do his thing. (charles law)

oh see what u mean, says in the padi OW to open your mouth and make a ahhhhh sound, didnt say not to empty your lungs, thought it was a bit odd if u expelled all your air first before you surfaced lol

You do not realease all the air from your lungs during an emergency ascent. you just release small bubbles as you ascend to the surface. I was very surprised at how far you can make it just releasing small bubbles as you ascend.

In an emergency, I use a British accent, sometimes crossing over to Irish.

As far as ascents, though, NAUI also teaches to say the "Ahhhh" sound to open the throat so that air can escape as it expands in the lungs.

Ahh thats ok then, dont want to drown before I get to the surface lol, iv nearly done that when free diving / snorkelling, went down a bit father than I thought in Egypt, as its really clear you dont realise how deep you are until your going back up.

I was taught to say "zzzzzzzzzzzz" instead of "aaahhhhh" because he said you waste less air making the "z" sound.

I think that you might be referring to Boyle's law, which relates pressure and volume. Charles' law relates temperature and volume.

As for the original question, humming is a good way to allow air to escape in a controlled fashion during an out-of-air ascent. This is not an issue, obviously, if your lungs were largely emptied before you discovered that you were out of air.
