I use air faster than my younger fitter son, last dive I merely swam a couple feet above him and you would be suprised what a difference it made!
That and just not thinking and worrying about it probably helped too.

Its probably more of the latter than the former. If you are nervous about how much air you are going to use, it is pretty guaranteed to be a self-fulfilling prophesy. If you are calm and relaxed, the opposite is also usually true.
