I have been looking into this as well. I have talked to several com. divers and they have all told me to find the cheapest school and go there. There is young memorial which is a louisiana technical school and is the cheapest. You will work as a tender for a few years then "break out" and be a diver which takes 2-3 years depending on the outfit. check out www.offshorediver.com there is alot of info there.

The com. diver I have been able to talk to the most has about 1500 days in saturation and has dove all over the world including the north sea.
I'm hoping to be in dive school this time next year.......I have done a fair amount of research just let me know if you need any help.

Not sure where you're from, but this is a very reputable school. If you're looking at this as being a career, then don't base it on price. You need a good school with good placement capabilities.

Commercial diving school offering underwater diver certifications in ndt, and nde training.

Take it from someone who's been there...a diving contractor's interest in a newbie amounts to:

1. Does he have a pulse?
2. Can he listen without opening up his no-nothing yap?
3. Does he have any kind of commercial cert.?

If the answer to all three is YES!, then they'll likely hire you & begin to teach you the business. Remember, a dive school graduate knows a bit about diving, & nothing about the business of diving. So shadup n' listen, have a sterling attitude, work harder than anyone ( newbie ) else, & you'll have the time of your life & make some good cash.

p.s.: being a mechanic, welder, electrician or other trade moves you way up in line; if you lack mechanical aptitude, you better find some - real quick.

Regards,
DSD

My nephew is in a Welding Tech School in Toledo, OH. He called me one night asking about Scuba because his instructor told him that there is a lot of money and jobs in underwater welding. But, if he wanted to get into that he should get his welding certificate there in Toledo and then go to Florida where there is a very good school for that. He didn't mention the name of the school.

Also if you think about it you will be a tender for 2-3 years and probly will just get to make a hand full of dives in that time. Spending 15k on a big name school vs. $2000 on the school in morgan city........just my $.02

Hey, well Im just getting back into what I left in 1986 when the oil crashed. Hat diving for a hobby here in Alaska.
Yeh! I agree with Deepsea dan! Be ready to show good hard work and never ask to dive when you get your commercial divers Cert and that new job as a tender! Just work with intrest and hey if you have mechancal skills, welding background. then you might advance faster than other tenders. I never broke out as a diver when I worked with Subsea in 86. Oil crashed and went back to my other trade, Pipe welding! Now Im in Alaska and getting up there in Age 44. and got a good paying job at a remote mine site as a mill mechanic, welder and equiptment operator and a remote control hobby as well. RC helicopter! So I said what the heck, I dont need to miss out on something I really like to do. I just bought a Kirby Morgan 77, drysuit , com box and will get a pile of other equiptment this winter, have a pile to learn before I do some shallow beach diving next summer here in the artic circle. Back in 85, I ranked #1 in welding uderwater. Instructors couldnt touch what I did with just 2 rods! thats all I did too! 2 rods behind my back! pissed them off! Just seamed easy for me even underwater! to this day! I remember welding the T-Bar . One side look like a first time welder on top side, second side look like I did weld it on topside! One hit of the chipping hammer and it peeled off! I was smiling ear to ear, Showed it to the instructor while still in the water! 8' in a tank. He said over the com box. Get the h ell out of the water you show off B ast ard . I didnt mean to show off!
