I have dived Gilboa at least 1 trip the last two years and on both occasions we got an early start from N Indiana and were in the water at Gilboa by 10 AM and the VIZ both times has been above 50 ft now by the second dive if there are students doing certs the viz gets down to 30 ft min but I hadn't seen it below that. Whitestar second weekend in August viz was 50+ on both dives. If your driving from East of Cleveland you could easily drive to Gilboa do two dives then pack up and head to Whitestar after a nice lunch and get in two more dives I don't think they are more then an hr between em.

Gilboa is a great place to dive. yea they charge an entrance fee for each day you are there even If you are there for 1 hour of the day. even so it is cheaper to dive there than a boat dive and the have made some great improvements. We camp and that is very reasonable.

I like gilboa but I have stopped going as often due to the crowds. (last time I was there was 2006 or 2007).

That said, the shallow side is/was quite nice for most divers with enough to see over a couple of dives. The deep side - well, its deep - 140ish in the hole if you shove your computer all the way down. There is/was a trailer on the bottom over by the deep dock in 110ish feet of water and a few other things. Overall - not a lot down there but cold water (40ish degrees) and we rocks. Its a good place for advanced nitrox but a little shallow for tec nitrox or trimix.

From when I dove it quite often - the best service/vis is mid-week. If you can take time then, you have the place practically to yourself. Just checking the site - wow $17/day now. I was there for $10/day just a few years back.

And that doesnt include if you want to actually Park while your there... , another $5 (not per Car, but per person IN the car, which I think is Total BS)... and $8 airfills...

Its nice... no question... but damn near twice as expensive as Portage, an $7 more than Whitestar...

My LDS uses Gilboa (about 2 hours from home) for all of their open water dives. I have done both OW and AOW at Gilboa and I love everything under water. Their prices and restrictions...not so much. $17 to dive would be fine, but it costs extra for my wife to drive me back to the training docks??? That seems a little ridiculous considering she doesn't stay (not a diver). When I questioned them I got the typical response "We have to charge for legal and insurance reasons". Just my opinion but that seems like a cop out answer to me. I feel nickel and dimed to death at Gilboa.

Great diving though....

I just went there last weekend for the Haunted night dive and underwater pumpkin carving. It is a good time, but they totally nickel and dime you to death!!! Once a year is plenty for me. I would go more often if i didn't feel ripped off when I went.

Yeah, no kidding. That was a definite bummer. I wasn't able to get as many dives in as I would have wanted.
